What is the free trim of pine logs?
Hi all
I am looking to purchase some pine logs. One thing I keep reading in descriptions is the term "free trim".
Usually the description is given after the length of the timber, and it's value can be anywhere from 10-40cm.
For example: buy Sylvestris pine logs
Could somebody kindly help me decipher the meaning of this word?

My best guess, is that the logs are priced to 5.8m but an extra 10cm is added to allow you to trim off any damaged or checked ends so that you end up with 5.8m worth of usable timber.
My 2c worth.

I am not at all knowledgable about this matter, but having read several pages of internet presentation out of curiousity, it seems that this is correct, and it appears to only be applicable to pine logs. There are some dealers offering up to 40cm free trim, which perhaps reinforces this theory relative to the base felling shape.
My 5c worth (can't find any 2c, think SWAMBO gave them all to the bank when they went out of fashion)Last edited by wun4us; 26th May 2011 at 10:04 PM. Reason: words omitted
