Old furniture hardware
I recently acquired some fixtures from an old public building. Furnishings included a barrier with a hand rail, balusters and a gate. The gate had a pair of old steel hinges with "AK & SONS" stamped on withe the word "BLACK" and. Black would indicate the hnges were black japaned. The "AK & SONS" would be the manufacture. Does anybody know of or have any information about the manufacturer?

This is a photo of the latch from the gate, also steel. There is no markings on the latch, anybody know anything about the latch?

Would be grateful for any information.
Thanks

Long lineage back to the 1700s. The hinges are worth a bit too

Hi Jim, I can't tell you much but I do own a gate latch like that (somewhere). It is cast iron, not steel. I purchased it in a job lot in Tasmania where there are a lot of lovely antique fittings available. I saw similar latches on antique gates throughout Tassie.
I had two of them but one was used in a timber gate I fitted to our house in West Hobart. I don't own the house any more but the gate is still there. If I can find the one I have I will have a look and see if it has any markings on it.
