Were you using the Woodworker's Journal eZine plans of April 1 for your large vessel?

I don't know what "Journal eZine plans" are, but arks are fairly fundamental in their design.

My mistake. I thought you were the one who had picked up when one of our threads apeared in one of their editions, but it was Wheeling around. The eZine is a free web offering of the Woodworkers Journal and like most Americans celebrate all fool's day.
    Regards
    Hugh

I'd never realised there was a designated day, it seems to be happening constantly

Default A George III Mahogany Kneehole Desk - Part Seven

After cleaning down the desk, I built up a faded mid brown mahogany colour on it and polished it with oil and spirit varnish.

The handles were fitted to the drawers and, having finally made up my mind on the matter, I also attached lifting handles to the ends of the carcase.

    Lifting handle screwed to carcase.

When in business, I used to lay a fair number of leathers, not just for myself, but for other dealers too; however, I disposed of my embossing wheels when I closed my shop. I would have preferred to lay a slightly oversize loose hide on the desk top, emboss it and then trim it to size, but in the absence of any embossing wheels, I carefully measured up the desk top and ordered a pre-embossed hide which I checked to ensure a perfect fit.

    Pre-embossed hide.

After trimming and laying the hide, I attacked its glazed finish to reduce the harshness and impart a semblance of natural wear in the appropriate areas. The whole desk was then waxed – leather and all.

The finished kneehole desk – front...

    … and back.

    The fitted hide.

    The bracket feet.

I don't, personally... the missus is built like a pack mule and a little desk like this is no test of her abilities.

Friends/neighbours occasionally lend a hand too.

If we don't hear from you for a while, we'll ring round the hospitals.
    Lovely desk,

    G'day Woodwould,

Another mark of a craftsman at work. How was the leather fixed to the top, by hide glue?
I make things, I just take a long time.

No, even with retarder in the glue, animal glue would set far too rapidly. I use a paste which allows plenty of time to position the leather. I'll be writing a separate post on the topic for my blog next week, and I'll post the same here.
