Default Half Round Table WIP

Another piece using Raintree, as with the last piece (coffee table) the block of wood when sliced up largely dictates what happens next, when I layed the pieces out it looked like it wanted to be a half round table
basic pattern.JPG

For a while I was undecided on a solution to fill in the triangle gap, I cut some slices from another block but nahhh, so more looking for something to suit, I found some other small block/veneer slices that fit the bill
cutting slices of veneer.JPGpieces to fill in the triangle.JPG

Half the top roughed out, I think this will look OK, I am aiming for the outside edge to have scallops of yellow sapwood (for visual interest) and to delineate between top and legs, hopefully will look OK

Default more progress

Making up the torsion box top, being a half round theres a bit more work in it compared to a square shape, like adding blocks to the outer edge, for the skeleton I decided on a long ladder across the back then ladders going off that, I was also thinking to do it in a fan shape but too much work and once the skins are on it doesn't really matter, I can put all my wieght on the top and it doesn't flex...

a few pics of that process
skeleton.JPGadding blocks.JPGcleaning.JPGrouting the outer curve.JPG
skins on and edge cleaned up.JPGcloseup edge of top.jpg

There was spare sheet left over from the top so I decided to use that to form the curves for the front apron, I cut it into 100 wide strips, 1/8 thick probably would be better (easier) but I wanted to try what I had left over, first I had to make some formers, someone quoted a formula in a thread a while back for curved work, search search search, so trial and error, first up I made them the exact finished radius that I wanted, I knew the ply would spring back but I figured I have a known radius and if I decide to steam some bandsawn plies it might be somewhere close, it sprung back to a radius 112mm larger than what I wanted, so OK I'll make a former with a 112mm smaller R and it came out within 1 or 2mm, close enough for me, I did have thoughts of it ending up going too far the other way but was good and it gave me a cance to make an improved V2 former with bolts that I could do up with the speed brace
curve former V1.JPGcurve former V2.JPGcloseup bolts1.JPGcloseup bolts.JPG

I had some lines marked, surprising how much they moved, I used pva exterior for the glue up, the aprons came out nearly spot on and consistent

Heres a quick dry fit together
dry fit.JPGdry fit rear.JPG
I wonder whether I should have a rear apron between the back legs?

Ye Gods! That's an incredible amount of work for a simple table top! Cudos nonetheless.

Great job it is looking real good. I also think a back rail would be nice and give it that completed look. The WIP photos are excellent to help understand how the torsion box ect is done. It will be very interesting for me to see you put the veneer in place.
