Hall Table WIP
A couple of months ago I made my niece, Shelley, a 900 mm X 900 mm coffee table in camphor laurel. The frame and legs are solid camphor laurel, and the top is veneered over MDF. My favourite feature is the slipper feet. Here it is:

Recently, Shelley announced her engagement, and I received a wedding pressie request ... as follows:

On the road right now, and the project starts when I get home. First I need to make a sketch of the unit, and to receive Royal assent.

Spectacular grain and a beautifully made table!!
The "Rococo" nature of the grain makes me think of much of the furniture I saw in Europe.

What they said
Wow, what a beautiful veneer top. and well done on the whole job John.
Obviously you were unaware of the pitfalls of making beautiful pieces... it leads to requests for more pieces
Cheers, Ian"The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot.. it can't be done.
If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run.
And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better"

First a sketch was prepared. Today I received Royal assent.

The next step was to make a start on the legs.

Hope to progress the legs tomorrow.

Progress. The "wings" (for want of the proper term) are on and shaped.

They are now ready for finish sanding. Veneers for the top are in the background.
Next comes the carcass.

You've got these cabriole legs pretty well sorted John.
Looking forward to seeing this one unfold, the standard on your other projects has been very high so far.
This one should look fantastic too.
Steven.

Thanks Steven,
Cabriole legs terrified me until I actually made one to "suck it and see". They are no where as difficult as they look. I was left wondering what all the fuss was about. The toughest part is finishing them, so they are smooth and straight, but that is more time than any special skill.
Made the legs (including the template) in half a day. In just under another half day the wings were cut, glued on and shaped ... and I do not hurry things in my shed. An eager beaver would do the job in less time.
So, for those folk who have yet to make any, it is really worth having a go.

Carcass and drawer made. Shelley asked for a single small drawer in the middle of the cabinet, so the panels either side of the drawer are glued into place.

Now on to the plinth and then the top, which will be veneered over MDF.

Been a bit slack updating. Here is the veneered top in its vacuum press.

And here is the cabinet, ready for finish sanding and lacquer. The grain will leap off the surface once the lacquer is on.
