    Default help needed

    hi,
i am about to start my first outdoor project for my new house that i have recently moved into. i am planning to make up a privacy screen to hide the hot water system. i was hoping to get some opinions on what type of timber would suit this project best. i am wanting the screen to be made out of a medium to dark timber but am just very unsure as to what timber would be best. The screen itself will be quite simple with just 2 vertical posts, with horizontal slats. i was thinking the horizontal sections would be about 80-100mm wide. The overall dimensions of the screen would be roughly 2m x 1m.
Any information would be greatly appreciated and if you happen to know the rough price of the timber that would be great too!!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Fraser

    Question

Might be best to use treated pine and grow a creeper over it.

Try some Merbau that would look good. Or just pop into the local timber supplier and have a look at the variety. Another thing to do would be to have a look at the renovate forum as someone may have already made something similar.

    Default Trellis and creeper?

    Dig carefully too!

If your system is ground level, post can be 2.5m / 2.7mm to allow for planting.
550 mm deep. Min. This is because it's only a short span. No great load to support.
Bring it out a little wider ( from the house ) than what you want if you can. Plumber may need to get in, in the future. Ours just blew.

Post in Vic roughly $ 21 for this length post. Redgum new. Not your colour I guess.
But it will go with the Merbau. Try architectual salvage places for seconds. Timber is aged and dry too.

Treated pine will often be unreliable. In just a short period it can twist and warp thus distorting the horizontals and ruining your good work. I've seen a few treated posts change horribly. I hate the stuff. Cypress will do nearly the same.
I was fencing for a while. Oh my back ha he.!

You could use Trellis and then grow a creeper. Takes time. Cheaper.

    Pics when your done please.
Don't pass them by! Be daring and caring!

Dampen their misery....sit with them and talk a little.

Buy them something to eat and a tram fare to a local mission.
I'm so lucky that I've somewhere to live and have family support.

You could also paint it a dark brown. Use outdoor paint, get the colour you want, and the screen will last longer with less fuss. With a good coat of paint the timber becomes less important.

    thanks tex,
i have got some exact measurements for the screen, i dunno what the ratio of panels to gaps should be but i think i will have 70mm high slats that run 900mm across. i am currently allowing a 25mm gap between each slat.
The total height of the screen is going to be 1640mm. i am a little unsure if i should use 70mm x 45mm upright supports or 90mm x 45mm supports.
which supports do you feel will match the dimensions of the screen better? i am kinda leaning towards the wider ones atm but any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

    Hi Fraser,

The larger the gap the more you can see. The larger supports will give more strength if used as a goal for backyard soccer or football. I did a front fence in merbau recently with 90mm horizontal slats and a 15mm gap between. It gave me a good trade off between privacy and seeing through the fence. (the only problem was the merbau leeched over the newly rendered bricks). Make sure you leave enough room to get at the pilot light and that you can see the thermal overflow valve. Paint will last longer than oil outdoors but it's a matter of choice.

    Cheers

    Bryan
