Might be best to use treated pine and grow a creeper over it.

Try some Merbau that would look good. Or just pop into the local timber supplier and have a look at the variety. Another thing to do would be to have a look at the renovate forum as someone may have already made something similar.

Treated pine will often be unreliable. In just a short period it can twist and warp thus distorting the horizontals and ruining your good work. I've seen a few treated posts change horribly. I hate the stuff. Cypress will do nearly the same.

You could use Trellis and then grow a creeper. Takes time. Cheaper.

thanks for your help so far, i went down to the local timber suppliers and they suggested using YELLOW BALAT slats and KD HARDWOOD posts. i could the staing the timber to make it slightly darker if i wanted. any opinions on these types of timber?

You could also paint it a dark brown. Use outdoor paint, get the colour you want, and the screen will last longer with less fuss. With a good coat of paint the timber becomes less important.

i have got some exact measurements for the screen, i dunno what the ratio of panels to gaps should be but i think i will have 70mm high slats that run 900mm across. i am currently allowing a 25mm gap between each slat.
The total height of the screen is going to be 1640mm. i am a little unsure if i should use 70mm x 45mm upright supports or 90mm x 45mm supports.
which supports do you feel will match the dimensions of the screen better? i am kinda leaning towards the wider ones atm but any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

i got a price on both sized posts and there is no much difference. which do u guys thinl will suit the dimensions of the screen better?

Hi Fraser,

The larger the gap the more you can see. The larger supports will give more strength if used as a goal for backyard soccer or football. I did a front fence in merbau recently with 90mm horizontal slats and a 15mm gap between. It gave me a good trade off between privacy and seeing through the fence. (the only problem was the merbau leeched over the newly rendered bricks). Make sure you leave enough room to get at the pilot light and that you can see the thermal overflow valve. Paint will last longer than oil outdoors but it's a matter of choice.
