Help modifying TV cabinet
Hi There,
I am new to this forum and this is my first post. Looking for some advice on modifying a tv unit to make room to install a av receiver and a speaker, while searching online i came across this forum. If i have posted in the wrong section of forum pls let me know.
Our TV unit has got two cabinets at both the ends and a shelve with two drawers in the middle.

I am trying to remove the shelve just about the dvd player, Its been attached to the unit as shown in the image below

I removed the screws but dont know how to remove shelve itself, it looks like the front battern is still tight, first image above shows the battern in front of the shelve.
In order to install the av receiver i was planing to remove the two drawers also and install a wooden plank at the bottom so could put the dvd player there.

The cabinets at both the ends are 440mm wide and the av receiver is 430mm wide but the opening for the cabinet is way less than 440 mm, so the av receiver wont go in from front. So i was thinking of removing the drawers as an alternative.
Sorry for posting a long post, could fellow members pls advice how to proceed with this mod.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
The shelf has probably also been glued as well as screwed. A gentle tap with a hammer(using a scrap of wood so as not to mar the surface) may do the trick. There will be a line of unfinished wood where the shelf used to be that may be difficult to hide. invisible matching of finish is usually a challenge.
You may get away with the shelf removed but the frame around the drawers will be all thats left providing rigidity to the front of the unit. How much of that did you want to remove? The other issue is that inside the drawer space was not meant to be seen and the exposed frame will be in view. Not meaning to be negative but some things to ponder on before hacking away.
Regards
John

Thanks John for your reply and raising the point in terms of about the finish. I am not much concerned about the finish after the mods, as once the space is created, the AV receiver and speaker would go in place so not much will be visible as compared to open space.
As off now due to that shelve above the drawer i get two compartments, but thats not high enough for the av receiver hence i want to remove the top shelve, to maximize the height, then remove the drawers and the middle bar to convert that into another shelve so as the speaker or dvd player would go in place.
Any suggestions as how to remove the drawer sections and put another base plank to convert that space of two drawers into a shelve.
Thanks in advance for your time.

The top shelf should provide the wood for the bottom but as I said before I would be reluctant to mess too much with the main frame. The DVD looks like it would still fit in one half of the bottom section. I would not remove those back corner braces either but fit the shelf around them.
Regards
John

Hi..Welcome.
Before you try breaking glue that may be holding the shelf by pounding, I would like to suggest that you very gently try spreading the side walls. When I say gently, that's what I mean. Don't try to spread the walls more than about a 16th of an inch. The manufacturer may have pinned the shelves to hold them while the glue dried. If there are no pins or 18 gauge nails the spreading, even a 32 of an inch will facilitate things.

If you haven't already finished...
The metal drawer slides should be able to be unscrewed and removed. Some bits of wood around the same height or higher than the middle piece between the drawers can go from front to back. One at either side. Then you can use those to support a shelf without taking the middle cross piece out.
