    Default HSC Wood WORK

Hi all, just started my hsc year for 2011

I have decided to make an extension table.

I have already got my wood, its made from jarrah and australian rose gum.

i have attached some photos of what it will end up looking like.

any thoughts? would be very helpful

    thanks.

    Hi AldoDezani,

Will the main table top be solid timer or laminate over a substrate like MDF? The reason I ask is if it is solid timber and the table is in a humid area (as Sydney can get sometimes) the table top will expand a little width ways. This is not usually a problem but the expansion may cause the picture frame type edging to open up at the corners. An alternative is to "breadboard" the ends. This will hide the expansion.

Breadboarding was originally a method to hide and protect the end grain on a wooden table top. (please correct me if I'm wrong forumites). It lends itself very well to framing a table top in contrasting timber and compensates for expansion.

    I hope this helps.

    Thumbs up

G'day Aldo and welcome to the show!

Looks like a good project.Have to agree with TT 's thoughts on expansion and picture framing for the top.

A breadboard end done with a sliding dovetail may give you extra brownie points - and it will look good.

Make sure to think about proportions. To me that table you have shown has legs that are too thin - just a personal opinion.

Fine Woodworking - videos, project plans, how-to articles, magazines, and books probably has all the info you need, and then some, including the relative advantages/disadvantages of all the methods, but you may need to join up (small $ cost) to access all the info. Think of it as an online library and the $ cost as the cost of photocopying.
