    Default Kreg pocket hole

just grabbed 2 different small Kreg stuff from a garage sale and although they appear to be complete lack of screws was obvious, ......can I use square head screws for treated pine or do I need Kreg screws and ..that being the case where to buy from?

I have never bought anything from them, but they have a huge range of fasteners.

You can get kreg screws from carbatec. Kreg screws are self drilling mushroom heads. If you use scrooz, you have to choose a pan head, but some how you have to do an extra step in drilling out a pilot hole otherwise you are prone to splitting the pockets. If you are doing a small jobs. I would buy some kreg screws and be done with it. I use a lot of screws and so I go into the extra step of using a kreg screw to drill a pilot.

Phillips head are fine most of the time. With some softwoods the bugle head on the screws tend to push it through the pocket hole.Better with a square head to avoid this.

Forum sponsor Screwit sells screws suitable for pocket holes, but only for softwoods used for indoor or undercover projects. They do advertise a “hardwood” screw but as it’s still a coarse thread I personally wouldn’t go near them. Tried them once, never again.

If you want cheap screws for indoors stuff they’re fine. But if you want them in hardwoods or treated pine then get the appropriate Kreg screws suitable for the application.

Last time I looked carbatec was one of the cheapest sources for kreg screws on the planet (once you factor shipping).

The square drive doesn't matter, but phillips heads were specifically developed for factory assembly and are self limiting on torque. Likewise slot heads the driver can slip out. So you need a drive that isn't torque limited and is self aligning. In hex or hex head with integrated washer or posidrive will work.

However as mentioned above the problem is the thread form not the head. You might be able to use self drilling tek screws or other self drilling wood screws but the reality is kreg screws from carbatec are about teh same price as anything else and they are very good quality.

I love my kreg jig. I can bang out M&T's dovetails box joints at a good pace on my table saw/router/incra but when I have a quick job or repair to do the kreg just gets it done fast and easy. It really has it's place.
