    Default "the leaf"

    Let the journey begin
I stopped long enough to wipe the sweat from my brow and we're off again.
The Leaf, 2.4m long 1.2m wide, with the segments of the leaf done in different timbers, copper strips between the segments and originaly around the edge but I may change this to timber around the edge if the clients are happy to do so, a bit more stability and less likely to catch cloths etc. The legs are to be bent steel pipe powder coated, hmm, this may change too. So yesterday before I delivered the Red Mahogany table I called at MrP & W and picked up a sheet of 19mm ply. Today I set up the clients leaf sketch within a grid and marked the leaf onto the ply. Took a look and made a few slight artistic changes to thicken up some sections (you can see some of these lines in the photos) Then marked out the segments, few slight changes to the clients sketched segments, just looked too busy in some spots. Needs primary and secondary segments so it doesn't all look to much of the same and too busy. Picked up some of the timber for the segments from my wharehouse (one of those little storage sheds at Safe n Sound that looks like an oversized loo but does a great job for me). The sheet of ply will be the base for the segments, the template for the segments, and work bench. So far so good. Have to go to another job tomorrow but hopefully will be back on this in the arvo and on Friday.

Looking forward to this. How are you going to cut and join each segment?

Good to see you're branching out again.

Hey Mark, on the cover of the current issue of Australian Wood Review is a photo of the perfect matching chair for your table.

Why not throw in 8 of these with the table

Hey guys, that is a good looking rocker. Originaly there were 6 chairs to go with the table, each made out of a different timber but it boils down to the budget of your clients, what they wanted was pushing about 8 big ones just for the chairs, still may be some sort of cafe chair with some custom timber panels.

Lig, the segments will just be cut on the band saw and screwed and glued to the ply, fitting the copper strips between them and then dressing down along the curves. Will rebate top of the segments slightly to take the thickness of the copper. It will all become apparent in the next week or so.

WW, I'm not so much branching out as turning over a new leaf, boom boom. Oh dear, guess there will be a bit of this.

Oops, sorry Christos (no more tackie jokes) (maybe), I will be back on the leaf over the weekend, I had another little job I had to attend to. I saw the client or has daughter thisarvo and ran a couple of things by her so ready to go to the next phase now. Mark out and cut timber segments, hmm must pick up some more tracing paper in the morning.
