    Default Lift-top coffee table

Started with a $20 pine coffee table.
Cabinet scraper, to save electrons & sandpaper.
Black Japan, black spray paint, eBay lift mechanism, and added plywood bottom for storage.

I like what you have done with the coffee table ,do you have a link for the lift mechanism? I am thinking that perhaps a coffee table with Chess layout might be an option here!

    Search eBay for

    coffee table lift

as there are several variations of mechanisms available. I won't post the seller I used, as I ordered 2 sets of spring lifts, but got 1 set with gas struts, and the other "set" was a collection of mismatched springs and arms (they did agree to a refund without much drama)

It was for a friend who hasn't got much of a budget, and really just wanted the top darker than the bog-standard golden pine finish.

Time, and the lift mechanism were the only real out-of-pocket costs.

Looks great. I've used those lifters on a shop project and they worked well.

How did you finish the top?

The top was scraped to get rid of the massively thick layer of whatever-it-was, then left-over Knotts Pine Black Japan, then Monocel clear varnish, with the first 2 coats coloured with a bit of the Black Japan.
