Ok, today I tidyed up the scroll and put some joints in the three pieces to hold it together. I think most have dowels here but as this joint will have to be opened and closed a few times while in construction I decided to do a split tenon (maybe a new joint, I haven't heard of one before) a floating tenon has half or so glued to one piece of timber and the other half of the tenon is glued to the other piece of timber. the two drop in side by side in a biting action. Once all the parts are in I will fill the joint with glue and clamp it up.

A few more pics of the last couple of days progress. I used round floating tenons to fasten the outer ends of the scroll to the legs. I made a couple of short locator plugs with a sharp pin in the end to use as locators for the centre of the round tenons/25mm dowels. The round tenons are 100mm long, I have glued them into the scroll first. All the back is just sitting in place untill I get to installing the slats. These I think will have to be doweled in as the back gets put together. The back virticals have mortice and tenons joints. I have also cut a small centre leg that will be set in once the back is complete. I have also cut and planed the the seat boards and just have to plane the corners before anchoring them down.

Hi Guys thanks for the encouragement. Chowcini, its easy to do a WIP as I take photos to send to the clients to keep them informed of my progress so its not much more trouble to pop them up here. If my encouragement helps just one other person get into woodwork or give them a spurt along then I'm happy.
Wheelin, the shed elves are very weary and didn't do much on Monday. Left Friday morning at 10.30 and was at the farm in/near Yea 9 hours later. Saturday was concreteing and slice up a rather large tree with the chainsaw that had fallen over under a fence and cart away with the tractor for firewood. Dinner out with arguing in-laws, yawn. Sunday finish some decking around the swimming pool, have lunch and lead home at 3.15 in the arvo. Home in newcastle at 12.10, rained from Goulburn home. Bit trashed on Monday so picked up two more chooks for my home chook yard and then did a couple of hours on the bench. Elves, hmm the elves are weary.
Tony, did you get the saw blades and if so have you given them a lash? The whole thing is coming together very nicely, as usual the time is running over a little again. Never mind good things take time

Today was plane, round off the edges of the seat boards and start to attach them. I am gluing them in place, I will then screw them down and plug the screw holes. I had to put these on before I put the side rails in, I can't get screws in once I put the rails in.

Looking good Claw. You are going to need more than a few elves to lift down from your bench when it is finished

    Hi Claw Hama,

Now that is one serious garden bench. I absolutely love it, great work and a pleasure to read through.
