    Default Lutyens Thakeham Bench Seat

Next commission, an arts and crafts garden bench designed by Edwin lutyens. This one is a little tricky as I am scaleing from photos etc and only have a half baked plan.
So a bit of work making patterns but started cutting today. The timber is Red Ironbark from your friend and mine Mal Ward. The bench will be 2600 long 1060high (at the back) and about 650deep. So far so good

PS one day that Tallowwood power pole will be turned into furniture too

    Good start there CH.

Are you aware that FWW had a complete article on this very bench design a few years ago, with sizes etc?

    Edit:

A search will find quite a few threads on this design, this is one of them

Good stuff Claw. I made two Lutyens benches for a film set many years ago before they caught on and every garden centre started stocking them. They were made of Elm and were enjoyable to make.

There are a lot of small stylised versions around now too, so it's good to see you're making a decent full-sized version.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

I might have to drop in and have a look at this one.
You need a bigger shed or smaller timber
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I did see some plans but wasn't over fussed on there interpretaion and I would have had to modify as they were too small/short. And buy the time I found them it was too late and I was ready to start. Not a big deal, I have it by the short and curlies and all looking good so far. Forgot to take pics today but basicly just started cutting M&Ts and bits for the other side rails. Will take some more tomorrow. Hit a hard piece of Ironbark thisarvo I thought it was going to shake the blades out of my thicknesser.
BS, checked out that thread, that looks like that plan I looked at. it has the arm rests cut off short with a rather flat ordinary edge down the inside. I have put a more full curve to give it a softer look, more like the original.
Hi WW, Elm b--ger I'm out, I'll just stick with the Iron bark for now, should be good for 15-20 years.
Yes it is enjoyable to make, a good sturdy piece of furniture. I'm not sure I want to be the one to carry it up to the clients back yard though, it is going to be very heavy.
P36, yes well on the way thanks for the link though.
Tony, bigger shed, smaller timber, a stronger back and more money would be nice while I'm dreaming. You know you can call in for a cuppa or a beer anytime. Leave it a few more days till there is more to see.

I think you just have to give them a reason to put the power underground.

    Cool another one to watch.

Nothing exciting but a bit more progress. The ends are just knocked together in waiting, the long side rails are being cut planed and joints cut. I have done notched tenons so they can cut into the short side tenons as they are all on the same plane. This Ironbark is going to be the death of my weary old back.
I have been using an old deep frame 5" coping saw to cut the notch out. I got several packs of sample blades from a company to test but the package git damaged and the 6.5" blades went walk about so I am testing them with the old flimsy 5" deep frame. The blades are fantastic but will make a few more cuts and test before putting in an order.
They are fast and clean even in Ironbark . I will post details etc before I put an order in and see if anyone would like some. I'll do a report on them.

Hi Pete, yes some of those were Disney dollars I,m sure. I saw some in Smogney for $3500.00, this one is bigger and will have some zinc embellishments to match the zinc top table I did for them last year so they won't get much change out of $4k. It is still a good deal there is a lot of work in it.

Slow down man. It will be out the door before I can get there to have a look.
Not really, I know time is money and all that Coming along nicely.
I would be interested in some blades when you get around to that.

Hi Tony. If you get a chance call in and I'll give you a couple to try and see what you think so it's not just my opinion. The only catch is I only have the 5" blades. You can always call in for a test drive on my old deep throat

Not sure if i like the sound of that But then again...
5" should be ok I think. I just picked up a set of Eclipse saws and i have no idea what size blade they take but it looks about 5" . I'll measure later.
