The resawing by hand was more a penance issue and a tribute to Bushmiller ..... but I soon returned to the bandsaw!

Truth be known, I was having a lot of trouble resawing on the bandsaw so I spent some time yesterday going back to basics and re/tuning the bandsaw. I patiently went through the Snodgrass tuning process, including removing the table, and eventually successfully resawed some 280 mm wide x 30mm thick Australian red cedar into 2 pieces which both dressed to 13 mm thick. However, I needed a selection (=ALL!) of my featherboards to keep the workpiece both vertical and against the fence...

While I have it set up, I will do all of the resawing (that I know of...) for the project!

Well, not quite “ALL”! Before resawing, I searched high and low for my Magnatec right-sided feather board. I found it today......

    Oh man, doncha hate that?!

The only time something like that is remotely good is when it's been there for some months/years, and you've gotten over the loss. (hopefully not at the cost of having purchased a replacement)

more like two men and a detour via Camden pub -- which at a guess is more productive than two men and a bottle of muscat

    Default Form follows function....... sometimes!

The dresser is going to be a complex build including interchangeable doors, modular design ....... and a large SECRET COMPARTMENT
It will have to be built a bit like a caravan ie built from the inside out?
This all means that I was having trouble visualising all of the joints as some of them are 3 and even 4 way!
I spent today making a ‘functional’ prototype. It ignores final size and proportions but includes (hopefully) at least one of each type of joint that is needed on the real piece.

    EE945EAF-2CC0-4234-AFB4-D6CC511D0937.jpg 5E8CF987-E1C3-4E02-BF36-C350F4CFF834.jpg AF2ABC74-4C5C-4C9B-9187-FB0652B084E9.jpg

The radiata pine was salvaged/scavenged from various bins and firewood piles and, for the first time in my woodworking life, I (or more correctly my thicknesser!) found a bullet lurking inside one piece!
I should now be able to finalise the design and get on with my cut list?

My ‘functional prototype’, now christened Frank (as a shortening of Frankenstein) has grown a second storey.......

    A79855B4-EB27-4445-B74B-FE2587AEA9DE.jpg

.......and has helped me design new ways to fit and fix the internal plywood dividers. I still have to work out the structure for the back and drawer slide mounting but that should happen over the next few days. I’ve found that although Frank is intended to be a design tool for structure and joinery only, he can help with some detail design modellng as well and will soon be wearing my proposed top of leg designs.

Frank is at the peak of his usefulness! I have now worked out (almost) all of the joinery and can create a cut list using the real dimensions.

I have also (roughly) made a prototype of the proposed top-of-leg treatment and, with a piece of ply pretending to be the marble top, I like the look of it.

    A3AE3E7F-66E6-49CE-831D-7EC49CF9898B.jpg

The beauty of the the design is that it allows a slightly larger cabinet but still lets the marble top appear to float above.

    Thank you Frank!
Because of the ‘functional prototype’, components straight off the cut list assemble without any ‘adjustment’......

Nice when things go according to plan! Seems like a rare occurrence for me lately - can't decide if it's because I'm growing more careless or getting more ambitious.....

Went to an industry meeting yesterday and, I think, finally convinced the remaining doubters that I really have retired and that I would prefer being in my shed making furniture and listening to the rain on the roof. So, to keep faith, I spent today making furniture ..... and listening to the rain on the roof.
Frank continues to help and, by the time I left the shed today, the strategy of building the complex cabinet from the inside out, was starting to take shape...

    1CE9F9A0-2E8E-42D5-93AD-47EDD80DBFE7.jpg A1622F86-9475-49B0-8987-F106CED2BC29.jpg

..... the carcass above is the (upside down) lower portion of the cabinet ready to accept the plywood base. After that, the drawer carcass will be assembled on top, the back added AND THEN, the legs fitted?
The joint shows the complexity of the riddles solved by Frank.
So far, everything has only been screwed together in places that will not be seen in the final product but, after all the parts have been fitted, I will pull it apart again and glue it permanently together.

Maybe I could borrow Frank when you're done, Fletty? Do you think he could find the missing 4.5mm drill I lost a few days ago?

Damn thing was brand-new too, got it out for it's first job & it just silently slipped away. (grumble, mumble....)

    Cheers,
    IW
