Thread: Marble top dresser, the planets align

I’m now up to 2 useable tiles...

..... which allows PLAN C (2 original tiles interposed with 3 new plain tiles) but I am still hopeful of satisfactorily repairing another tile to allow PLAN B (3 original tiles interposed with 2 new plain tiles). As suggested on the forum (thanks NCA) I am using Selleys Porcelainfix but I had no luck tinting it with powdered fabric dyes. I finally sourced some REAL pigment oxides from WA which arrived yesterday...

.... and I feel I’m now on track with ‘material’ but have a lot to learn re ‘technique’? The instructions advise that the tinted epoxy can only be used as a filler NOT an adhesive but I require it to be both? Here is my first effort...

.... and, once the broken bit is firmly fixed in place, I am hopeful of laying in some more as a filler? The uncured, tinted epoxy can be smoothed with a rag dipped in acetone and hopefully this should make ‘cracks’ look like ‘crazes’?

.... and, for the finishing touches, I have 2 choices. Our own ‘glider’s’ scientific method befitting of the chemist that he is and/or the witchcraft-voodoo suggestion from Auntie Google. Luckily(?) I have 3 to do!

I think the cracks just authenticate the vintageness.
Go the voodoo option. Much more reliable than that scientific nonsense.

I don’t have to decide which method just yet because I only ordered the ingredients on-line last Friday. Whilst glider’s ingredients were quite simple (having been given both the common and scientific names), the Auntie Google method may cause a little angst because I can’t seem to get fermented eyes from FEMALE newts ?

I’m going to be out of the shed for a few days but Ive managed to get back to where I was before changing the design to 20 mm less width ...... and breaking the tiles!

However, not all was rework as some of the internal pieces have now also had their finish applied and some of the assembly is now permanent. The next steps are the splash back structure and making and fitting the drawers.

That piece of marble looks sensational! By posting pictures of the internal carcase, we spooks are busily working on the likely design of the secret compartments. Even the use of the plural provides its own clues. Any publication will be restricted to Pravda to which very few forumites are subscribed.

Thats a great idea Ian, I did a similar thing with the secret compartments in the tables I made for my daughters

Ah, that's how you prevent personal injury. Hi-vis wood. I could have put that to good use twice this last week. Actually, turning the lights on in the cramped shed would have helped too .

I like the secret compartment concept with build details for posterity.

OK spooks, here we go, The Spookworks are OPEN

There will be 5 ‘secret compartments’ in the dresser. One is an externally visible, large compartment to house the special stash of fine whisky and/or wine and its secret is HOW to open it. It will be as visibly discrete as I can make it but, as it is to house a dozen bottles, it can’t be invisible? Two will be ‘sophisticated’ secret compartments where they will be virtually invisible and the opening will be via an immediately available but remote mechanism requiring no tools nor even minor disassembly and 2 more will require some minor, tool-less disassembly.
I had a minor eye operation last Tuesday (I had been medically verified, one-eyed for many years! ) and decided to use my new-found but giddying stereo vision to start the fine work...

Some of this spook-work needs to be made and fitted now while the locations are easily available ..... which was the main reason for building the cabinet from the inside out in the first place.
