Messmate splitting options
What are my options for the attached? It is the headboard for a queen-size bed frame I am making. They way I see it I have 3 option but I'm new do this so I'm hoping there is another better option.
1. Fill it with epoxy and sand back. I don't wan't to do this because I haven't used epoxy anywhere else and think it will jump out to much. I have never used epoxy before for that matter.
2. Get glue in there some how and clamp it up, I'm guessing this is a bad idea because if it opens again it will be a mess.
3. Leave it, hope it doesn't get worse and consider it part of the imperfections of the wood, there are plenty of others which I like so this might not be a bad option.
I'll be sanding to 400 and finishing it off with 4-6 coats of Tung oil. I guess my worry is it will widen over time. It seemed to get worse when I planed the side due to going across the grain and putting pressure on the crack.

I'd give the dark epoxy a go ... and use a couple of butterflies to hold it into the future.
It may need to be finished carefully ... notorious for splinters?

It looks a little like there is another crack opening up just a little further along. I can't figure out where on the bedhead this is occurring but would it be possible to rip the entire bedhead along the crack and then re-glue?
I'm guessing that there is stress in that piece and perhaps ripping it would reduce the stress. Perhaps do a little research as its just a theory! Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.
