    Default Mud Kitchen

My daughter-in-law sent me an e-mail suggesting that my granddaughter would love a mud kitchen for her third birthday.

Made a sketch using this pic (found online) as the basic design. It will have a drop-in, lift-out plastic basin for a sink.

If the kitchen bench is a hit, I'll make the stove for Chrissie.

Unit is 1,000 wide, 450 deep, bench is 600 high and it is 1,200 high overall.

Decided to use some old recycled hardwood for the frames. Last time I used this stuff it dulled the knives on my planer, which is why it has not been used since. Some of it appears to be high in silica. For this job, a mud kitchen that will sit in the backyard (in this case a rain forest on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland), I decided to use the table saw to dress up the timber a bit and spare my knives. Here is the first side frame. All joinery is loose tenons (Domino) ... two 8 mm tenons per joint, using PU glue.

And here is the frame in its clamp farm.

I have some old painted Oregon Pine beams that I'll cut up for the top, but there won't be enough for the whole unit. I'll see what I can scavenge from around the shop before I buy anything else.

Buy nothing, walk around and talk. I'm sure I have stuff you can have for the purpose.

You could put her name on it. Chrissie's kitchen.

Some switches or a bell too. You could make a little arrow that she can spin around. Three year old girls love that stuff. (Just imagining a three year old making things out of mud.) She will love it.

The original design had cupboards under the counter top. That plan lasted only seconds. About eight years ago I made a similar unit to hold my gas barbies. I thought the enclosed cupboards to be a good idea ... at the time. However, I soon discovered that all I had accomplished was to provide a haven for cockroaches, mice and all manner of critters that crawl, slither and that like to crap in dark places. A new unit that was open was made earlier this year. My daughter-in-law is the type of girl who shrieks and climbs onto tables at the sight of such critters, so it seemed a better idea to leave it open to avoid creating a haven for vermin, and so she could hose it out occasionally.

I had some painted 200 X 50 mm Douglas Fir beams that had been reclaimed from a demolished pergola. Initially, I thought there would not be enough to finish the mud kitchen, until I figured out that cutting the beams into 15 mm boards rather than 20 mm boards would mean I easily had enough Oregon for the job (but thanks for the offer, Enfield Guy). Thank goodness for my Laguna SUV band saw, which did the job quick smart.

    Here it is, almost finished.

And here it is after two coats of decking oil.

Just a few bells and whistles to attach, which is likely to be done at my granddaughter's place by her dad. Delivery planned for tomorrow.

If she really likes it, the matching stove/oven will be made for Chrissie, complete with knobs, dials, hotplates and etc. I even have a piece of clear PVC lying around to make the oven door. Mind you, the oven is likely to become a hiding place for creepy-crawlies, but what the heck ... it gives my son a chance to rescue his wife occasionally.

Thought I'd leave those details for my son. Charlotte loves to help Daddy do such jobs.

Legend has it that after her Afternoon nap Charlotte's first words were, "Can we play mud kitchen now?"

Looks like it will be an oven for Christmas.

And I'll bet her granddad had a twinkle in his eye when he heard that!

Of course! Charlotte's mum has hinted that after the stove, Poppy might like to think about making her a washing machine and drier.
