It's not a fact; I'm polygamous. I'm just not into Victoriana/Edwardiana and slab work.

But I would be correct in saying a preference would I not?
Also, it is somewhat disturbing that for one who has always been careful to keep his private affairs close to his chest, you now see fit to enlighten us with your domestic arrangements. Have you no shame?

Let's face it, it is a regency thing - Hell Fire Club and all that.

    Exclamation

Ian, I take your point on spreading the beauty by veneering, but thhat has nothing to do with a piece being worthy or not on the basis of it being made form slabs.

Yes, many pieces are poorly constructed, as you say. This is also the case with all types of furniture. Again, not a reason to summarily dismiss something as unworthy.

Same goes for your third point.

Crikey, better go put on my karate suit

We happen to make a pretty good living selling such furniture, it`s not everyones thing for sure, but neither are the older genres.
Myself the older era`s of furniture, whilst i can totally appreciate the craftsmanship, do nothing for me what so ever.

I get more of a kick out of designing something from scratch totally unique (or at least attempting to) than i would following/replicating a design that was made a few hundred years ago, thats just me.

But it`s all good either way as long as your creating something and enjoying it, i think there is room for everyone and everything

If you and I had a sell-athon in Perth, Melbourne or Sydney, I have no doubt that you would win hands down.

Nah, we're just doing a bit of winding-up, gooma.

I like to pretend to be more intolerant than I am for the sake of a bit of free-for-all debate (& I strongly suspect a few others have similar motives ). As I said in my first post, there are no objective measures of beauty, & you simply cannot justify what you like by any argument that stands scrutiny. You really don't need to justify what you happen to like (but I'll hold a torch to your feet for bad construction methods! ). What a dull old world it would be if we all liked exactly the same stuff!

Though it's probably true that the best thing about a lot of slab furniture is that it's storing good wood for someone in the future who knows how to make better use of it...

    Cheers,
    IW
