Default PNG Rosewood material choice for conoid chair.

I have three large lengths of 50mm PNG Rosewood left over from a job I completed recently. Thinking of trying my luck at one of those "Nakashima Conoid" chairs. The joinery looks like good fun. Typically they are made of Black walnut that has similar Janka hardness to PNG rosewood and wood solutions .com .au as them matching up pretty well in terms of strength and joint group. Any opinions?

    Thanks.

From my experience with both NGR and Black Walnut, I'd say they should be interchangeable as far as strength is concerned, and have pretty similar working properties. But I have noticed that the NGR that has been through my hands was variable, & some bits were rather soft - more like Aust. Red Cedar than Black Walnut. Also, something else I have noticed with it is that you often encounter compression failure (looks like very fine 'squashed' lines running across the grain), so make sure there is nothing like that in a crucial structural piece. As long as your sample is straight-grained & sound it should do the same job as Walnut.....

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
Thanks Ian. Appreciate the comments. I do get what you mean regarding the variability of the density in this rosewood. I've got a few heavier bits that I think will do the trick. Cheers.
