    Wink Just a quicky

The jobs you do between/while doing other jobs. This started out as just ordering in a slab of Australian Red Cedar for a builder who wants to make an internal door for a job he is on. Ordered in from Mal one slab of Cedar 2.3m x 900 x 50, it has a split in it though, so I said, ok I'll cut it and join it for you, charge a few bucks, all good. In came the slab from Mal, looks good, cut out the offending split, jointed, doweled, glued up, done. I ring him and say "you can pick it up in the morning" ahh can you plane it down to 35mm trim to 2040 x 820 and brace it up (old school dunny door style) yep no problem. So off we go again. One shot of jointing and one of the glue and clamp up. These days I try and get my jointing spot on and crisp so clamping is a low presure afair that I don't need so many clamps and they are only just finger tight or nipped up. I am not trying to bend timber and apply a lot of pressure.

Just put these pics on the thread about jointing. I think not mater how good my saw and blade were (from what I have seen) I would always hit the joint with at least one pass with the jointer. If you get it right the joint disapears and all you have is a collision of grain and hopefuly depending on grain pattern that will be minimal. This door is going to an upmarket home in the Hunter Valley wine area, I also heard they are after a large table so I would be silly not to make this joint razor edge. Took these photos to show the flattening of the door not the jointing. I roughed it down with the electric plane first and then flatened it with the 7. This morning I roll her over and do it again.

That's excellent, you are getting more then I am. Normally friends just ask me to help them out. "Need help to more furniture," Ok, I'll be right over. "Need to move the fridge," Ok, I'll be right over. "Need help to bleed the brakes," Ok, I'll be right over. "Need help to paint," Ok, I'll be right over. "Need help to feed the dog," Ok, I'll be right over. "Need help to scratch my B&*T," Hang on a minute....I'm thinking.....Ok, I'll be right over.

Always good to see this type of work. Last time I had to thickness down a board by hand was in high school(25 years ago). Simple reason I do not have all the planes needed to get a wide board down to size. Next on my list of purchase is a Jointer plane, certainly could not afford the one you have.

Hi Christos, I had an ebay sell fest, sold off anything I hadn't used in a while or didn't hold too much sentimental value and all my old market bought Stanleys to get that plane. But it is fantastic, I jointed the whole Blackwood office suite and now working on the door and it is still razor sharp.

Nice one Craw, it'd be good to see it hung. Must be some substantial door frame it's going to hang off...let alone the hinges. How come just a single row of screws in the middle of the bracing

    Thumbs up

Had the same thoughts as Springwater.

Not much colour showing in the photos. I take it that is due to the lighting?

It is actually very light, it is Ausie Cedar which is very light. I have made the brace out of Tassie Blackwood as there is still plenty laying around and its slightly darker colour makes the bracing a bit of a feature. Cedar doesn't move much very stable, the braces are glued so not realy much need for too many screws. The joint in the door has 9 dowels in it so everything should be pretty strong. A rough guess it might weigh 20kgs at the most.

Did I read this right? You took 15mm off that whole face by hand? Crikey, how long did that take? I could not even contemplate doing something like that.

Missed that. Thanks goodness - I was worried about him. I would still stuff it up with an electric plane. You blokes do some amazing things.

Hey guys, I'm only a little crazy, no haven't seen it installed but the owners loved it so I have just sent off another two. These two I only had to flaten and take of 5mm. I cut out the 2040 x 410 sections, doweled together, flatened one side with the #7 and then LAJ, flipped over took off the high points and took down to about 36 - 37mm then the 7, LAJ then Noris A2 on both sides and a sand. They are quite a job, wish I had another 35mm on my thicknesser they would be a snack.
THe first one did have to be dropped by 15mm even with the elctric planer its a pain and a waste of good AR Cedar. Money is good though 1050 ea
Will try and get the builder to get me some photos.
