    Default red cedar bar

I thought Id better start my own thread rather than dropping in on Clawhammers with too many questions.Project is a bar in red cedar. I have a house on the South Coast,it was supposed to be an investment but the tenant did a midnight runner so I decided to fix it up one thing led to another & now I live there on & off depending how much Sydney annoys me.
Theres a 8m X 4m room downstairs used to be the garage, its now Manland, big TV,beer fridge, lounges, fishing rods you get the picture. Its besser block painted white. So in one corner I will reskin the walls in sandstock bricks, some convict, rest just 1800s,then set the bartop on a base of convict bricks & ultimately build glass racks, shelves in red cedar that are suspended from ceiling joists. Slab came from Mal WARD & is 3m long & goes from550mm to 850mm. I will have to do a lot of the work on my front verandah then get down coast install it,do the last bits of finishing in situ
I hope to post some photos shortly not that theres much progress yet, laying bricks in a heatwave with no 2 bricks the same a challenge. My highschool woodwork teacher said I was" his worst student since the war". It was the 70s & he meant WW2! Thats a pretty big field. So dont expect anything near the standard of clawhammer & the many other talented types who post. Moikel

    Hi Moikel,

We must have had the same high school woodwork teacher. In my case he described me as the biggest slacker ever to appear in his workshop. But here I am pursuing woodwork as a hobby in my dotage.
Never mind worrying about the quality - we all start somewhere, make mistakes and eventually produce something worthwhile. Please post some progress pictures to keep us interested.

What do you do with the sapwood? Its unstable & powdery in some spots so I chiselled it off do I keep going? I own a McKay Cedar table that the maker left it on & a redgum bar/wine rack where the maker took it off. Is it just a look thing or is there a reason to take it off even though its stable for the most part of slab?

Its how ever you want it to look. Sometimes as you say is powdery crap sometimes its firm. It also depends on the type of timber ie Mackay Cedar is usualy realy hard where as often Tassie Blackwood and similar are often soft and have grub holes.

Took it off, neater in long run. When Mal Ward delivered the slab he realised that he had supplied the McKay Cedar to the company that made my table 10 years ago. Wildwood? in Camperdown.

Just as an aside, if you need some more sandstock bricks, let me know. I'm getting rid of some. They're in the Sydney inner west.

    Default sandstock bricks

Im in the inner west as well,so pickup shouldnt be hard. BUT how many do you have? Im stockpililing them till I have enough to make 3 pallets then getting them down the coast by truck. Ive collected them from various demo jobs, over the years used them in different projects storage always an issue! Got 700 stacked at end of driveway at moment so another couple of 100 wont hurt.

By the end of the weekend, I'll have about 100.

There will be more progressively over the next couple of months, but I'm not keen on stock piling them.

I've already got rid of heaps just by leaving them outside the front of the house for people to take.

I'll send you a PM with my phone number and if you're interested you can give me a call and drop by.

    Default epoxy fill

Ive got this slab to a point where I will start sanding it at 120 grade next. Got sapwood off relatively neatly, grain looks good but I have this hole the size of a sanding block in 1 corner. Ive followed other threads about 2 part epoxy & now have these questions for the wise men of this forum. Do I just tack a srcap piece of timber from the underside over the hole ,fill it then chisel scrap off after its set How clear does this epoxy get I have some artdeco cherubs that I salvaged off a light fixture 20 years ago I was toying with the idea of setting them in the epoxy. They are alloy, bronze look should polish up well but to have any visual effect the epoxy will have to be clear. They are about75mm high. 1 foot is threaded so I can actually fix them inside hole(I hope). Thanks a very dusty Moikel

Its looking very good Moikel, keep sanding! I wouldn't fill that hole unless its going to cause you grief. I would just clean it out and put some finish around it.
