Default Another one of my rustic style potato storage bins

Ok probably not meant to be in this category but it probably doesn't belong in box making category either this is bin number two out of the pair I was asked by a mate to make for him, the dark Timber is rimu which was ripped out of old wall studs from a demolished house and the light timber surrounds, base and lid is pine, this round I decided to counter bore the screw holes so I could hide the screws with dowel plugs and I feel that this was a much better look than seeing screws all round the outside of the bin, the finish you are seeing was done by my old usa made stanley no 3 sweetheart from the 1920's and there will be an after photo once it is oiled with boiled linseed oil. Jointing methods used Dowel joins for the surrounds, Tongue and groove joins to form the sides and rebate joins on the corners when assembling the bin, base has been rebated so the center slots inside the bin and the same will be done on the underside of the lid.

the planes I used on this lid no 5 (stanley handyman from the 90's), 4 (fuller) & 3 (USA made type 13 sweetheart)

Good old no 3 still has it in her no need to sand this lid

you appear to have great pleasure in gloating about the amount of Rimu you use. I hate you. sadist dang its beautiful timber, one of the finer things I miss about the birth country.
I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

Out of all honesty this is the first lot of rimu I have ever worked with I normally use green sawn untreated timber used for concrete boxing as it is cheap and affordable for me to use at $1.69 per metre while I am getting the hang of doing stuff with timber again and I was only going to make one of these bins for myself until I posted it on my facebook page and one of my mates wanted to pay me to make two of them for him so the last bit of rimu I have will be used just for that a potato bin for my partner and I to replace the weak gaudy looking one I slapped together at the end of last year as an act of desperation to store my crop of spuds that I grew. Now that I have some of the proper tools to use and be able to do this sort of thing properly not just a circular saw and a few other basic tools. One thing though NZ native timber is beautiful and I have always admired things made from it and has always been out of my affordability to buy but now things are different with the availability of recycled native timber I can but it and make the stuff I want with it as my abilities grow.

Rimu is one of my favourite timbers, I should have made more things with it when I was in NZ

The lid is done surface finished using a stanley No3 smoothing plane with cap iron set very close to cutting edge , and rebates under the lid was done with my record No778 bit disappointed about the bit of tear out I got while rebating across the grain but that was my error with cutter depth being a little bit too deep so that was quickly adjusted
