Default Shorter lengths (15m) of coloured Melamine edging?

    Hi All,

To demonstrate "return on investment in power tools" to SWMBO, I've been instructed top make a TV cabinet as our current one (AKA an unstable magazine rack) isn't compatible with a toddler.

I've made a design for a corner unit in sketchup and am thinking of using Melamine coated particle board as the carcass material. The only problem is that I can't find anywhere locally (Melbourne, Northern Suburbs) that will sell anything other than a 50m roll of coloured Melamine edging. By my calculations, I'll only need around 12m in total but have "rounded up" to 15m as I'll no doubt have a couple of learning experiences on the way.

Any ideas where I might be able to get hold of this?

I could just send a cut list to allboard or somewhere similar, but I'd rather do the edging myself because:

    a) I (probably) can; and
    b) I want to be able to say "I made all that" at the end of it

    Cheers

Sometimes the cabinet makers will sell you what you need.

Might pay a bit extra per metre. You can only ask.

If you're after white, try your nearest big green shed. They should have 10m rolls.

    Two thoughts
1 as artme said. I have a mate who is a cabinet maker and has many ends of roll of edging he keeps just in case but this does not help as I am in Sydney
2 Do not try and match it or something close, try a contrasting edge can work.

    Thanks all.

Will ring around a couple of cabinet makers and see if they can help.

    Rusel,

I was thinking that if I got the edging and board from the same place, the colours (definitely won't be white) should be a good match. Is this not the case?

    Cheers

If you have yet to purchase the board, you may as well try Allboard or similar as you previously mentioned (Cabbies may have left over stock from jobs, but you will be limited to those colours). Just as for X-amount of matching edge tape when you order the board.

Thanks Craig. Haven't bought anything yet as I want to "buy once and buy well". It was allboard that would only sell me a 50 or 100m roll. May just end up biting the bullet and going with that option as I'll either need to replace edging when our toddler starts eating it or build something else with the same materials (desk etc.).

    Cheers

There used to be a firm in Essendon that would cut to size and edge for you but I cannot remember their name.
They had a place in Mt Alexander Rd, next to the Essendon Tram Depot but I know that has closed, I am sure that they also had a place on Nepean Hwy around Gardenvale or a little further down. It is a long while since I have been down that way so do not know if they still exist.

Mr Google might be able to help.

Edit ; Just found -:PLYCO, Buy Plywood Online Now who offer a cut and edge service. They are in Fairfield

Yes if you get it all from the same place but you might have to get the 50mt roll.
Or if you have a sample of board and go to some cabinet makers during business hours and ask if you can look through the edgings and see if you can get a match before you buy your board. They might be able to get it in for you at a good price. Most shops these days do not use pre glued edging so you will have to keep this in mind also.
So ask yourself all this running around or buy 50mts

Once I needed to fix an edge on IKEA flatpack bookcase, and found a lot of different iron-on edging on ebay. Worth having a look - delivery from US or UK is reasonably quick.

I get the feeling that I'll be swearing enough while making the TV cabinet and don't feel the need to as needless stress.

Looks like I'll be getting sheets and a 50m roll from the same place and practice my "but I need to make an ABC or XYZ to use up this edging dear" excuses to SWMBO.

    Thanks all for your help.

    Cheers

Two years ago when I bought the last lot of Melamine iron on edging, admitted white, a 155 meter roll was 50 cents cheaper then three 10 metre rolls at Bunnings.

So do the sums of 50 meters compared to a small quantity at Bunnings if they have the right colour and texture. As to finding a furniture manufacturer that has the right size and willing to sell a small quantity, well pigs can fly.

So I always buy the large lot and have a couple of years supply on hand.

Allboard can cut and edge to your plans if you are considering buying board and tape from them. If you go this way, get the job machine edged with 1mm edging, doubt that the kids will manage to peel it without making a concerted effort, it certainly wont chip etc to start something for them to pull.

Issue with cut and edge service is that you will be paying for layout time and CNC/operator time, benefit is that all holes will be drilled for assy, hinges, drawer slides etc to 0.1mm accuracy or better, kit will be labled and packed ready for assembly, and they can supply the hardware probably cheaper than you can buy it elsewhere because they have high volume accounts with the distributors.

Other flat pack suppliers should be able to offer similar.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.
