    Default Single Bed

    Hi all,
Just thought i'd take a stroll over from the Metalworking area and show some pics of a bed i'm making for my youngest. I have already made a similar one for my eldest so making this one has been a bit too easy so far......gulp

The timber is Sydney blue gum, i harvested 3 tree's from my parents farm some 12 years ago and had it milled. Its been air drying since.

The legs after mortising, The through mortices, for the side rails, where roughed out with a forstner bit and cleaned up with a router bit in my metal milling machine, with the help of a false table. The stopped mortices, for the head and foot rails, where drilled with a forstner and cleaned up by hand. The legs are 65mm square.

The tenons on the head and foot rails were simply cut on the table saw, using the "lots of cuts" (can't think of a better name) technique, and again cleaned up and fitted by hand, mostly with a paring chisel and a rabet plane.
    IMAG1842 (Large).jpg

The bottoms of the legs beveled on the saw

Dry assembly and detail of the dado for the head board.....yes its veneer....call it a bad throwback from my days as a commercial cabinetmaker...

    IMAG1846 (Large).jpgIMAG1847 (Large).jpg

Head and foot part sanded and glued up

    IMAG1854 (Large).jpgIMAG1859 (Large).jpg

The mortices for the wedges to hold the side rails in place (more in the next post)

    IMAG1853 (Large).jpg

Filling some checks in the side rails with laser printer toner and "zap" superglue. The side rails are cut from 2 boards that where cut from the center of one of the tree's, so there are a few checks.

Here is a vid of the cutting of the wedge mortices in the side rails. The drill bit is a 10mm Colt twinland, 1600rpm. The mortice is angled at 5deg from vertical. It is 40mm long and goes through the 100mm of rail tenon. This is the first big test i have put a colt drill up to, and it did very nicely...

Well now, that's an interesting technique for drilling a mortise that I'm going to have to try one day. I've tried to use drill bits like router bits for mucky slots in thin material before but figured I was just being crude

    Nice work all round

    Thanks boys.
Keep in mind the morticing was done on this....

It works on a standard DP but you have to take it a lot slower.

The mortices have been squared and the wedges cut and fitted. Now for some slats and a sand and Wax. Since it will probably be at least sucked on by my littley i'd rather not use anything more than wax, and its is sooooo easy to repair. This is coming from someone who used to smother everything in 2 pac poly mind......I'll be happy if i never see another can of it again.
