The pattern was routed with a Dremel (fitted onto to a Milescraft plunge router base) by following an adjustable template (Milescraft spirocrafter). Sorry no hand carving - didn't have that much time to get it right.

This is stunning. Do you reckon you could have managed without the leigh? I'm interested because after looking at the price of beds today for our daughter I am talking with hubbie about him making one.

The leigh FMT jig made the whole process easier and less time consuming for the foot and head rails. A festool domino would have been even better for making foating tenons especially for the side rails. These cannot be done easily with a FMT because routing of the tenon needs to done with the workpiece clamped vertically. That is, the FMT would need to placed about 2 metres up on a high platform for the side rails.

BTW, this bed was started on April 9th and finished on May 23rd. Many evenings, weekends, and school holidays. I would say the equivalent of 14 x 8 hour days - so factor that in when you get hubbie to make one. I am not trying to discourage you, but I also have a fully equipped and dedicated home workshop. You will need that to get the excellent result at the end. That is why these custom-made beds cost so much to buy.

Thanks for that information. We actually want something a bit simpler ie not big piece at the foot but DH has made the dining table and we sort of have a dedicated workspace with a fair bit of equipment if you count that we haven't had the cars in the garage for the last two years due to the slabs drying out to make our dining room chairs!
