As Rocker now knows, the good Major actually demonstrated that HE can produce a flawless, natural looking finish.

In the hands of others, nitro produces other sorts of results!

I love it when people bring me stuff to practice on!

    Come on TeeJay, you're next!

As for the curved arms: I really don't think the chair needs them. The arms are at a perfect height for comfort when sitting, and I don't want to devalue Rocker's expertise in this area, but he seems to "fluke it" every time!

It's the sort of fluke that comes from years of doing it, analysing and understanding what's happening. Even in this case, he built a prototype, then fiddled with the details until he got to what you see.

The reason it looks like it works, is that it does.... very well indeed!

Default Rocker, you're just adding to my want to make list

G'day Rocker, BitingMidge, et al. Long time, no see.

Nice job on the Z chair, very nice proportions.

Look forward to catching up with you soon,

    Al,

Where have you been all this time? How did the claw-and-ball feet turn out?

    Midge,

It is not so much a fluke, as using TurboCad to fiddle with the design until it looks right, before actually building it.

    Zenwood,

I think that shaping the arms would detract from the impact of the zigzag design.

A very nice design indeed, Rocker. Worthy of the zig-zag master.

    Cheers,

    G'day Rocker,

Have been happily ensconced in an asylum since taking a run at the claw and ball feet. Also, was in rather full on job for a while with lots of traveling so little chance to get my hands dirty.

Have only now set up the workshop again after an almost 2 year break from making the wood chips fly. 5 hours to align the table saw, 3 hours to align jointer/thicknesser and about 30 flaming hours to plane the workbench top flat! (Should have made it out of MDF.)

Good to see Midge, The Major and all of you "old boys" still going strong. My extremely tolerant, long suffering Girlfriend and I have shifted to Highgate Hill in Brisbane and I've been commanded to produce some cabinets for the lounge so I hope I shall be able to brag about them in a few weeks. After that, it's the highboy so have started looking for comfy asylums in the area.

    Cheers guys,

    Al.

    G'day Major,

Still waiting on the stock. Will be the first time I've used a gum tree for anything except falling out of.

Anyone have any experience with working the gums? Jeez, what am I saying...look where I am!!! Largest collection of flapping gums in the Southern Hemisphere!

    Very impressive Rocker

I would have expected the curved back slats and cushioned seat to look out of place on the Z but it looks good.

It would make it much more comfortable.

I suggest you tell those idiots to stop standing on your fine piece of workmanship.

I wrote the attached article on this chair for publication in an American woodworking magazine, so the measurements are in inches; however, they didn't want to publish it, so I thought I would put it up here in case anyone wants to build it. The chair has 80 mortices in all, so it would suit someone who has a Domino, or at least a precision router morticing jig. My chair is in rose gum with jarrah back slats, but I think it would also look good in blackwood or jarrah throughout.

Excellent looking piece of furniture. Seems to me to be quite well resolved. Good luck with the competition.
