    Default Z-spring chair finished

I was lucky enought to get Bitingmidge to spray this chair with nitrocellulose lacquer, in return for infecting him with Domino fever.

Photo 1: The chair was tested to ensure that it could support the weight of anyone whose backside was small enough to fit into it. Rocker and Bitingmidge's combined weight is 160 kilos.

Photo 2: The chair is sprayed.

Photo 3: The finished chair, hopefully Bungendore-bound.

.. and I was lucky enough to get a cuddle from Rocker!

The chair looks great and feels fantastic to sit in I have to say, another top effort.

    Cheers,

    P

I've seen diagrams and designs of these Z-shaped chairs before, and honestly it didn't take to my liking. BUT.... I'm converted - your's Rocker looks absolutely fabulous! The curved back, along with what looks to be leather on the seat make this a beautiful piece of work. It looks comfortable too!

A great finish by bitingmidge as well.

    Top work!!!

    Cheers,
    Nathan.

Looks great Rocker. Next you'll have a rocking Z-chair I guess.

    David, I like the chair.

Picture 1 is definitely a Kodak moment except Midge looks a bit uncomfortable. (Midge, it is OK to hug another man)

Has come up a treat David - I particularly like the contrast of soft curved back against the more contemporary straight lines typical of the Z style.

Particular reason why you chose the finish to be nitrocellulose lacquer?

Maybe Mr Midge has answered it here under a different thread

On the other hand, for Rocker's Z-spring chair we used about 5 light coats of satin. "About" because of the complex shapes, some got more, some got less. The chair will be rubbed out with steel wool and Ubeaut Traditional Wax, to give a "warm" natural(ish) feel and look.

I know some would say that we were wasting our time wiht lacquer, that we could have achieved the same with Oils or wipe on finishes, but not in a few hours one afternoon we couldn't.

    Teejay,

That's why I use the stuff, I'd be thinking Rocker used it because:

    a) He likes watching other people work.
    b) He likes the company.
    c) He likes the food.

That's why I go to his place whenever I need some tricky bit of hard work done anyway!

Seriously, it's the quickest and easiest way of getting a finish that I know. Almost no waiting between coats and so forth. I am no spray king, but can get reliable results quite easily, and I owe it all to Major Panic!

(Thanks for letting me play too Rocker!)

Fantastic idea to incorporate the top of the Zs into the arms of the chair. Tilting the whole thing back with different mitre angles is another brilliant design touch.

I wonder how it would look with some shaping of the arms (Maloof style)?

Thanks again for another superb Z-item.

I think it's time you moved on to another letter of the alphabet. I think you are starting to become letterist.

    Nice job

    Teejay,

Normally, since I don't own spray equipment, I would just use wipe-on poly as a finish; but MajorPanic has demonstrated, with pieces like his hall table, that nitrocellulose lacquer can produce a flawless, natural-looking finish. Since I am aiming to enter this chair in the AWR competition, I thought I would bludge on Midge, so I stood around, whilst he did all the work.

    Good plan

I've got a bookcase in the garage here and it is dyed with coffee grits and i am ready now to apply the shellac - but hmmmm - on the roof-racks and Mr Midge I'm on my way
