    Default Table top support.

    Hi all,

I'm currently planning a dining table & need advise on how much support the top will need. Top will be recycled Messmate 40mm thick & measure 2100 x 1100 with 300mm removable extension on each end (making length 2700), legs will be RHS steel tube (75 x 50). The top won't be sitting on the legs (see attachments)

I was thinking of running 2 35mm square SHS steel sections (200mm in from sides) between the 2 legs, would this be enough support for the top?

PS. Sorry I haven't worked out how to put attachments inline.

Not sure that I understand the design... It seems that you are framing the 2100x1100x40 wooden table top with a square steel section frame. A slab that big CAN warp, I guess but it will also support its own weight and a lot more besides. Whether the lugs that hold the wood in place are 200 mm long or 50 mm or even less does not matter, but I would make sure that they are securely welded or bolted to the table frame... I figure that the wood on that table top will weigh 80 kg or more.

I have seen 19mm tiber bookshelves, 900 mm wide being supported by 4 tiny little plastic coated lugs.

    Hope that this helps
