    Default Timber rack question

I have built a timber rack that is affixed to the back wall of my shed.

It is constructed from 75x6 angle, for uprights and supports (the supports are simply a piece of angle that protrudes from the upright, at right angles).

The uprights are at 1500 centres, so as it is now, any timber placed on it will be unsupported for 1500.

I could (but don't really want to due to time issues) put ply or similar on as shelves, but I thought this might restrict airflow around the bottom piece of timber too much.

So, is 1500 unsupported too much? Will solid shelves restrict airflow too much?

    Thanks

I recently made a wood rack with three supports each 1500 apart. I think for most bought new stock it will be ideal but as you say is a bit far apart for shorter off cuts etc. I just intend to use some thick old planks to support shorter pieces.
I dont see any problem about airflow since the second piece of timber in the pile and up will be in the same situation anyhow.

Thanks. The concern I had with air circulation was related only to a pile of Spotted Gum I have that needs about 2 more years of drying.

I had another look at the set up and I'm going to put ply in 2 of the 5 shelves so storing shorter pieces isn't a drama.

Just a dopey idea but what about builders mesh cut to size. Would support more timber, allow air movement, look different and not suspect to white ants

IMHO 1500 apart would be good support for4 X 2, 3 X 2 on edge but smaller sizes will sag under their own weight. I would think that 750mm centres would be more appropriate. Solid shelves of ply will not help support shorts and will not only restrict air flow but also let dust settle on them. As mentioned mesh will let air flow but will need closer support. On the white ant issue if they want your spotty they can march up and get into it while you are not looking. Solid shelves would give them dark areas to hide and mount their attack. With your stack of spotty, I would go through it every 6 months and restack it while changing positions of the pieces,

I made a rack with 3 X 2 verticles with half inch pipe to rest the timber on. The verticles were about 600 apart and the pipes 300 apart up the verticle. I haven't seen the rack for some time as its chockers.

Another consideration is to remember what species you have and where it is. May be its me heading for geriactricism that makes me suggest it Also remember to stack the stuff safely. You wouldn't want to damage anyone if it falls.
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

I made several racks for holding small lengths of timber suspended from the ceiling out of strips of builders mesh and it works very well.

Adam, I've got a strong suspicion that if you posted this question in the milling forum they'd say that green timber needs support every 600mm.

How's that for wetting your parade (choose your own fluid)?

No wetting required. I ended up using formply as shelving across the length. As far as airflow, I realised when I looked at it that the bits in the middle will only have what ever the sticker dimension is above and below (19mm in my case) so the bit on the bottom will have the same cause it's sitting on a stick, not flat on the ply.

I'll post a pic later of the finished item.

    Thanks for the input.
