    Interesting question.

The Veritas skew rabbets will cut rebates up to 1-1/2" wide.
The combo plane tops out at half that width.

Cost wise, it's $289 CAD (Skew Rabbet) vs $489 CAD (Combo)

Derek, I read your thread responses with dread, for you say "on my site is a review...." And after *again* going there to read this review, I'm hit with another dilemma...

The Veritas (Lee Valley) Bevel Up Smoother

Now I'm reading about the combo....

    My wallet! My wallet! Mercy!

That's the justification I need to get it past the Minister of Finance.

I almost bought the small plough, but there seems to be a lack of metric irons available at the moment.

I have a Record No. 050, I might try using that a bit more before I get the Veritas.

This is the topic for a whole other thread, but as Adam Cherubini (who used to write the Arts and Mysteries column in Popular Woodworking) observed over 10 years ago, plough plane blades should be teamed with your chisel sizes. If you use a 1/4" mortice chisel, you would be ploughing a 1/4" groove -- likewise if you use a 5 mm chisel.

When it comes to rebates, and grooves for drawer bottoms, one part is made to fit the other so the cutter size is largely irrelevant.

    Notwithstanding, Veritas make metric grooving blades in 8 sizes 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm and 18mm compared to 11 imperial sizes.

If you have a complete 050, I suggest you persevere with getting it to work.

The Record takes a slitting cutter which, at present, the Veritas Combo doesn't.
The Record also takes hollow and round bottoms -- from memory in sizes 6, 8, 10 and 12 -- plus a nosing bottom.

I will not be surprised if within the next year or so, Veritas release similar bottoms for their combination plane.

Well I ended up ordering the 10 1/4 bench rebate, rebate block and 1/2" corner chisel. The tongue and groove dilema will wait until I have specific projects waiting.
