Hi All.

This afternoon my mate Bob dropped around the handle spindles that I had asked him to help me with. Bob is a fine engineer, and as usual, delighted me with his precision. A lovely man with real skills and a willingness to help anyone who needs it. The American White Oak spindles were oiled and the American Walnut handle supports were polyurethane spray painted.

I also got a chance to finish the sliding tool trays. I made the tray handles from some very figured Camphor Laural that I had bought in slabs. I picked out the darkest and most fragrant pieces. Rust inhibiting remember. True! I plugged the screws with the matching Walnut.

Pete your engineer mate hasn't done half bad job there bet they are only out .0001 or so.

Just watch the Camphor its intoxicating he might get high on the fumes

Today saw the completion of the tool chest.
image.jpgI just needed to fix the handles to the sides of the chest. I did not want to show any fixings so I decided to dowel and epoxy glue them on. To do this I would need some dowels. I've got some standard pine dowels but wanted to use hardwood dowels instead. So I pulled out my old dowel making "machine". I've had this since I was an apprentice. I don't use it much, but it works just fine. I just milled a bit of Jarrah to 10mm x 10mm and then hammered it through the 10mm hole in the jig. Perfect dowels!

Then the dowel holes needed to be drilled. They have to be nice and straight, so I cut a piece of board for a template, marked it out, drilled the holesand then used it to drill into both the handles and the sides. I made a depth stop for the drill because, heaven forbid, what if I drilled a hole through to the other side?

I then scratched the polyurethane off so that the epoxy would stick, then glued and clamped the handles into position.

Now it's finished.

I asked my mate Graeme to come over to the workshop this afternoon to have a look at something I was working on. when he walked in to see his name on a chest, He was speechless.
After a few moments to take it in he said, "Pete, I am truely touched that you would spend so much time making something so beautiful for me. Thank you very very much".
