TV Cabinet design thoughts
Im currently designing a new tv cabinet to wall mount in the main lounge room. We have survived the past few years with a rush job of mounting an ikea piece to the wall underneath the TV, but its time to upgrade it.
The TV and soundbar are already wall mounted, and I was going for a somewhat asymmetrical design. Cupboard doors to hide crap that the kids play with, and to hide the movie collection, with a few open shelves for displaying some chosen few items. Im probably going with plywood for the main cabinet pieces with something else to hide the front edges, either pine or tas oak. Im thinking of attaching the main horizontal cabinet to the wall using french cleats.
Just after some advice or thoughts from the brains trust here, tell me if there are any glaring problems that I may run into.
Thanks

Your sketch looks ok and french cleats work well for hanging it. The only comment from me is give some thought about how to hide the jungle of wires and ease of connecting the various game boxes.

No comments on the construction, but one question on the design.
With the thicker cupboard ok the left needing to have reasonable depth, with it quite close to the tv would it partially block some of the screen for people not sitting square on?

Assuming your TV wall mount is on an extendable arm, the lines of sight should be OK. French cleats are a great idea on strong joinery. If you want your remote controls to work easily, I wouldn't be encasing any of the set-top boxes behind a door unless it's glass, and even then I'm not sure. You've included a lot of open shelves, all of which will collect dust. IMO clear or tinted glass doors with chrome shower door style hinges would add to the design. I use the Golden Ratio for attractive proportions wherever possible. Form follows function, so make it beautiful.

If we're being frank...who cares what other people think of it? They don't have to live with it, so they don't have to like it.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Ive narrowed down the setup to just the TV and Soundbar which are both wall mounted with cables running through the wall, and a 4k bluray player and switch on the bottom centre shelf. No other plans for other boxes, so cables should all stay fairly hidden. That was the idea behind a drawer in the centre there, I can hide a powerboard and the wall plates behind the drawer, and just have the drawer not the full depth of the cabinet.
Also regarding the sight lines, the TV is probably sticking out about halfway to the left side cabinet, so that shouldnt be an issue.
Thanks again.

Bullnose wall plates are a god send for keeping cables tidy -

And there are a million infrared extender/repeater kits out there if you did want to put some of your AV gear in the cupboard. Half depth drawer for hiding wall plates and power is a great idea.

I havent actually changed the design as is, although Im still not sure on what colour scheme Ill go for. Im not sure if I want to keep it all wood grain and stain it, or paint some pieces of it. Ive just done a two tone colour scheme mainly to separate it.
You can see the black box and the switch below the centre drawer at the bottom, and Ive already got those bullnose wall plates in place behind the TV and where the drawer will be.
Dont need to add anything AV wise, having the new TV and soundbar means its all down to a single remote which I love, the smart tv features on new TVs have a come a long way in the 6 or 7 years since we last bought a TV.

Put something like a 30 or 40mm pipe in the wall that exits at the back of the TV so you can add or remove cables as you wish. I have just been through this though I did not build a cabinet just hanging the TV on the wall. We had to run a power cable and two network cables but you will need more for the video feed from the DVD player as well. I hung the DVD between the wall and the TV and repairing the gyprock was a proper pain.
