Thread: Veneered Panels - Miter Corner

my first thought is "that's a lot of curly maple"

for the corner joints, I'd be happier if the very corner was solid wood to protect the face veneers.

I make mitred boxes in veneer like this all the time at work and there's no issue at all, just very lightly sand the corners to take the sharpness off.

Thanks Elan. Would you suggest using veneer with solid edging for the drawer front or could I get by without the edging?

Depends on the look you want, it's not essential. What IS essential is that you veneer both sides of the board; doesn't have to be the same stuff, but it should be the same thickness or it WILL warp.

Another thought... If you join your solid edge before you veneer there won't be any join line on the face

I wondered about putting the solid edge on first, but was worried the join would telegraph through the veneer and show a line at some time in the future...

I've done it with MDF with no problems, Ply...dunno. As an aside, why are you going for ply over MDF if it's all veneered?

My thinking on plywood over MDF was that the ply would give better screw holding (leg base plates are screw mounted into the bottom of the box), higher strength and less affected by moisture than MDF. I was thinking of using a good quality plywood such as birch ply.
