    Default WIP redgum coffee table

    Hi,

I am having a go at my second furniture piece. A coffee table from fence posts. I dont have enough fence posts for the top so am considering a different hard wood with appropriate stain.

The base joinery is complete - all M&T using my new mortiser and tenoning jig (both jet tools from WWWH)

These tools are AWESOME, I love the mortiser and the tenoning jig makes quick work of the tenons too.

I rounded over all the base pieces with router table - stupid me I also did the top of the rails which was a mistake as the should have been left to give a clean line to the table top.

The table is 600 high by 530 square. The posts are 60 square the rails are 60 by 25. The tenons are 10 thick 50 wide and 30 long.

I am thinking of including dowel pins of the same hardwood as the top for extra strength and look.

I found one more post behind the garden shed. It might just be enough. Will mill it next weekend and see how far it gets me. My FIL has another post for me so I might just have enough.

    Nice work so far Pellcorp
I love the colour and grain patterns of redgum. Spend a bit of time selecting and arranging the pieces for the top. It should look great.

Ok so I found a couple of posts and have done the initial milling. It's amazing the beauty you find under ugly fence posts

I get 4 hours a week at most in the shed and so this WIP is going slowly ) I finished milling the boards for the top and left them clamped together so they would not move too much on me. I don't have enough to cover the whole top with complete boards so will have a join or two as a "feature". I could only get 70mm wide pieces out of the posts but I am going to use biscuits for alignment and I have a jointer so should be able to get them nicely joined together.

I watched a NYWS episode on making a table and so now I know how to attach the top to allow for wood movement.

What's wrong with 4" nails through the top? Ah it's redgum probably couldn't drive them through without them bending and marring the surface

Don't think I've seen that particular episode, so which method did he use

Cutting a groove on inside of rails so can attach table with wood anchors that can move in the groove and are screwed to underside of table.

I saw this at woodgears.ca as well

I have finished jointing and thicknessing the boards for the top. I have decided to have breadboard ends to avoid joins and for a little extra challenge.

I am going to use tongue and groove and wood plugs to attach the breadboard ends. I have to use some loose tenons for the shorter boards (

Anyway I think it's going to look nice if I can pull off the glue up

A different angle. You can see the loose tenon stock in the background already milled to correct thickness.
