WIP Interesting Table
Just started a build of 3 tables that are fun to make. I have decided to built these to hopefully encourage my students to try some thing new.
I'll post more pics as the materialise.
The photos follow the building of One in Qld. Walnut, the other 2 are in Fiddle-back NG Rosewood and Australia Rosewood.
Construction of frame requires 11 pieces 31/2" x 32" x 3/4" (80 X 800 X 19mm)
Top can vary 1 will be solid timber the other 2 veneered on 19mm Birch Ply.
Thinking of putting a chess board in the NG Rosewood one.
Machine pieces to size photo 2,3,then mark-out.
Cut legs and rails to shape. photo 4 make sure mitre are precise or as good as you can get 'em!
Glue frames together photo 5. I used Dowels but biscuits or a domino will do just as good if not better!!
More to follow tomorrow.
Cheers

I'm really looking forward to seeing your tables being built, especially if you do put the chess board on top of one of the tables

Well day 2 photos' self explanatory but just in case the're not...
Photo 5: once miters are glued up run each leg over a lock mitre router cutter (evil looking bit so take care)
Photo 6: Rebate some slots for table buttons. 3 on the ends and 5 on the rails.
Photo 7: Glue the legs together on the mitre. Lots and lots of clamps needed and work quickly,
I use hide glue so if you use a slower drying glue you may have a bit more time. Make sure all edges meet tightly.
Photo 8: 3 glued up frames today.
Photo 9: just some wet to give idea of colour of finished tables.
All tables will be French polished
Qld Walnut with Shellac.
Rosewood with Buttonlac
NG Rosewoos Dewaxed Blond.
See if I can get a top on at least one tomorrow.
Cheers

Nice tables Steve. Do the legs angle inwards or is that appearance from the lense?
Cheers

I am a competitive chessplayer, though not a professional (or even especially good). FIDE, the World Chess Federation, has guidelines for chess boards and tables which you might review.
They cover size (a lot of "chess tables" I see have no room for extra paraphernalia chessplayers have such as scoresheets and clocks), contrast of squares and, importantly, reflectivity. A table that reflects light from windows or lamps can be distracting.John
