Compound Slide
Hi,
I recently replaced my compound slide nut due to wear. The spindle and new nut fit ok without to much movement. However I'm getting about 0.4mm of movement between the spindle handle and shoulder.
I think I've put it back together incorrectly. I did it a few times but not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas? I have tightened the gib screws but still get the movement. When I turn the compound in (towards the the headstock) that's when I can push it back - hope that makes sense. I am thinking of ways to overcome this movement such as putting a washer in there but would like to make sure I'm putting it back together correctly first.
Ben.
ps I've replaced the cross slide spindle and nut without any problems. I thought the process was the same.

Were both parts replaced.
If so measure your old one at the dial end and compare it to the new one.
If both parts were not replaced was this clearance present before.
If the clearance was not present previously then you could probably say that something during assembly was incorrect.
You will probably need to machine something off either the leadscrew dial end or a little off the face of the fixed nut or may be both.
If you look at PM Southbend hints you will find information dealing with excess clearance on the dials and how to correct, easier than trying to explain it here.

The Hercus 260 version of "Text Book of Turning" operator's manual has info on adjusting dial free play. Also the 260 Maintenance Manual.
I don't think it's in the manual for the 9 inch models, which are identical in this regard.

I request that someone scan the page/s of the manual with the instructions for removing the gap and uploads it as an image here.

Well sorry to say I started on facing off part C. Didn't work out the way it was meant too.
I was a bit distracted and held the assembly by the bushing instead of the spindle. Long story short, the my original spindle is now slightly bent.
Will have to see Mal about getting a new one.
Sadly Ben.

My observation has been that the majority of hercus compounds rest screws run out of backlash adjustment quite quickly, ie. the ball handle runs into the spindle shoulder. My quick and dirty fix is to remove the ball handle and run a chamfering bit into the back of it. This usually buys about another 0.5mm of adjustment.
