Default hercus compound spindle woodruff key

    Hi Guys,
I would like to hear from hercus owners about the need for the woodruff key that retains the crank handle on the compound and crosslide spindles. I have made new parts to replace the compound spindles but can't see the point in adding cost to the part when a handened pin would do the same job at a lower price to owners. Sheraton used a pin in there's although it was 1/8" compared to the Hercus 1/16" keyway. Although I am a great believer in using the original design for most things this seems a cost that can be avoided. I can't believe the forces generated in this application woud in anyway compromise the required strength.
Maybe I am overlooking something, so please give me your thoughts on the subject.
    Many thanks
    Mal

    Default

    Hi Mal,

From my point of view the only requirement is that the arrangement allows axial movement, so that backlash can be minimised by tightening the nut.

The forces involved are very low, for example, on chinese min-lathes the handle isn't fixed by anything! The retaining bolt on the end simply pulls the handle up tight against a very small shoulder, this is sufficient to prevent any rotation of the handle relative to the screw! (I have to hand it to the designers, it looks like a terrible solution, but it actually works perfectly.)

    Cheers,

    Rick

    Default axial movement

    Hi Rick,
No problem with movement in that way it still works the same.
