Hercus mill, Model 0
Recently bought a Model 0 from a Tafe college. Dirty but little used. (what can one expect for $170.00) Before I got there they laid it over and broke the long travel hand wheel in halves. Didn't find the broken bit though, so wondering whether anybody can help. I can operate it as it is but, it don't look pretty. Wheel diam approx 2 3/4".

I just slipped out to the shed and measured the handwheels on my lathes and mill.
The 9 inch tailstock handwheel is 3 3/4" in diameter. The longitudinal handwheel on the O is 4.210" in diameter. The Z axis handwheel is 3 3/4"dia.
Hercus transmission equipment catalogue numbers are T22 for the small wheel and T25 for a 4 1/4" wheel. There is no matching teardrop handle for the T22, The handle for the T25 is no.T2.
If you buy one of these wheels, you will have to cut a keyway to suit the keyed leadscrew. The smaller tailstock handwheels are secured with a taper pin.
Good luck
Bob.

Well spotted Bob, the longitudinal hand wheel in in fact the larger of the two. A fatal mistake assuming both were the same size. So it's T2 I am looking for. Hercus told me the original hand wheels are no longer available and the new stock hasn't hit the water yet. Six week lead time and "who could have guessed they were now being made in China". Now I have got my size right, perhaps someone can help me with a 4/14" (nom) wheel.

Hi tanii51,
perhaps you would check your wheel out for me, now we know 4 1/4" is the one.

Larry,
I don't know why I didn't measure the apron handwheel on my lathe. It is 4.350" in diameter and again, pinned to it's shaft
If Tanii can't help you out, I'm sure you would find a matching 9" South Bend handle on US Ebay.

Mill Lubrication
Larry,
You might have already done so, but if not, it would be worthwhile wading your way through the old posts on this forum. There are a couple regarding oiling the mill and one about the importance of oiling the cone pulley. NO GREASE.

Hi Bob, went to the apron handwheel, link and would like to ask some questions of the seller. Unable to find a way of contacting the seller. Perhaps you can walk me through it.

Alan's FP1 Dial
Ken,
Can you expand on the process used by Alan to refurbish the dial? Was it satin chrome plated like your Arboga dial and coated with a layer of superficial rust?
I'm pretty sure the final photo is part of the work of this talented fellow. Unbelievable.
