I am new today to this forum, and just had to pass on my thoughts about the excallibur scroll saw, I have had the 21 inch one, and is so much better than any that I have used,in fact cannot be bothered to use one at our woodies group,or my old one either, that I have become a snob ha ha, . I look forward to being able to buy timber that is the right thickness that I want, I do use Tasmanian myrtle , but cannot find timber in 3/4 inch except pine in our area, I would be interested in joining a scroll group

I get all my timber from J & C Thin Timbers. I have yet to be disappointed when asking for a specific species. And I have always found them extremely helpful. Okay, it might be an expensive way of getting it, but when you are spending days, sometimes weeks, making a project which is going to take pride of place in your home it seems a bit trivial to quibble over a few extra dollars. And they have a lot of Aussie timbers too.

    Default scrollsaw

I'm a scroller based in Brisbane, and have been disappointed to see how slowly our hobby/passion/profession has progressed here in Australia when compared to the likes of America.

I see three major problems with the progression of scroll sawing in Australia:

    1. Lack of clubs/associations
No where for potential enthusists to experiment prior to purchasing equipment, and
no where to go to obtain training/encouragement.
    2. Lack of promotion of the hobby
You always see woodturning groups demonstrating/recruiting at shows, festivals
    etc.
    3. Lack of affordable, easily accessable supplies
It can be hard to find suppliers either offline or online and uur consumables on
average are double what we should be paying. Our timber selections (species and
piece specific) is poor when compared to the likes of box makers and turners.

To do my part I am looking at establishing a website to promote not only the art of scroll sawing, but also as an avenue for entheusists to promote themselves and their products to consumers, galleries and retailers. (Thick cut works in art galleries overseas have price tags of $700+ and are surprisingly common).

I have also spent time talking to both local and international suppliers in relation to establishing what could be Australia's most comprehensive (and cost effective) source for scroll sawing supplies and Australian specific information.

What I would like to know is:

    1. Do you currently buy your consumables (blades/timber etc) locally offline, or online
    from Australia/overseas.
    2. Would you consider buying online if not already.
    3. Would you be interested in buying exotic American, African and South American
timbers. They would be around 50% dearer than local "exotic" timbers.
    4. Would you like to promote your work to a broader audience.

I look forward to receiving your comments and hope to see scroling move forward in Australia.

I would love a one stop website, the only access I have is the local mens shed and for a 30yr old mum I feel a little out of place and have been apprehensive about meeting up (I know they would welcome me). I am continually searching online for hints, tips anything that will help me. Currently I make wooden signs to sell at markets so between those and my children my time is limited but I would love to learn how to do other creations.
I would also love a craft supply for all wooden parts, I don't understand why this is so limited in Australia, and waiting for it to come from the US is like waiting an eternity (impatient I know).
I go through so many blades that it is easier for me to get them from bunnings, hate the quality and they snap so easily, but when your machine is on constant you need to access something quick and easy.
I would also love a list of timber supplies and where to get them in each state, even on where to get scrollsaws and see demos, and actually have someone that isn't going to talk to you like you have no idea. Possibly a bit of info about timbers, I am self taught, so learning as I go it would be great to look up on a one stop shop website on what wood would be suitable for a project I want to work on. For example I would like to make up some wooden teethers, but I am unsure on the best wood to use that is safe for babies ect.

    Hi crowie,
Thanks for the helpful reply and the links. Seems you are better at googling than I am! I'll see what I can find at ScrollSawAustralia.
    Thanks, Andy

    Hello,
I'm a member of the Albury/Wodonga Woodcrafters, not a member of the scroll saw association.

If you contact Helen Harris ( she sells all things related to scrolling, including blades!)
she can tell you more about the association.

Hi all I am new to the forum today and have read through this thread. I notice that the last post was almost three years ago and would like to know if anything ever eventuated in regards
to the WEB Site for Scroll Sawers, I am new to Scroll sawing and would like to have a one stop shop to go to. I am already in contact with Helen Harris and have purchased some blades from her.
I will also add that I found her service exceptional and will be doing more business with her in the future.

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum Rod...

I only use the scrollsaw for small toy parts but I've seen a few scrolling clubs at wood shows.

The other place is the internet for scroll sawing blogs and patterns, many free.

    G'day Crowie.
Thanks for the welcome and the links.
I am still only dablling with my Scroll Saw (I got a Ryobi 16" as a christmas pressy a few weeks ago) and have only been doing a few learner exercises that I found with google searches.
I know the Ryobi is only an entry level Saw, but feel that it will give me the ability to learn the basics.
I don't know of any local to Dubbo NSW, clubs as yet, so I think I'm on my own to learn the craft apart from what I can pick-up from forums like this.Scrollsaw practice pattern 1.jpg

    G'day Crowie.
Here are some pics of my first training exercise, my Scroll Saw set-up and my first actual work piece, a new insert I found necessery as the supplied insert was lower than the saw table.
this works much better than original one.20180119_115438.jpg20180119_115324.jpg20180119_115348.jpg
