A birthday present for an 8 yr old
Hi All,
I was asked to make a birthday present for a young lady who turned 8 on 28/12/11 and would need some where to hang necklaces and store other "jewellery" she was getting for Christmas. It was to be wall hanging with the ability to sit on a future dressing table.
Red Cedar with Silky Oak for the false draw front and pine for the draw.
RegardsHugh

Well done. And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

Lucky 8yr old!
That's really stunning!
I can see that being passed down the generations for years to come!
When ever I have been asked to make something special like this, I always hide a few secret compartments in them and only show the person who is receiving it where they are. I always felt it gave a personal touch to what I was making. It is a great place to put a date and a personal message too.
I made an opium coffee table for my mum on her 50th birthday and burnt an inscription under the table. It's strange, but I am more fond of that 20min addition to the table all those years ago than I am about the 3week project I did when I was 19.
I'm sure she was chuffed with her gift!

That's a great present. One thing to remember is never to forget this persons birthday. Sometimes people forget and only give one present over christmas. One friends birthday is on the 29th of December and that was common to do.
Sorry do not mean to lecture.

Beautiful!

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

A simple "Thank You" is all we need sometimes. This one is particularly moving.

Congratulations, Hugh. Beautiful!
Is it a mirror between the shelves, please?

Yes it is a mirror, the original design had a horse and drover there. The other variations are the flat bottom, the hangers on the side and the name.
