Brass scrollsawn insert box
Hi everyone
Another box from the new book. This one uses brass as a feature. David enjoyed scrolling the metal. The brass insert is covered with some thin perspex, left over from the many model car windscreens.
The timber is unknown, having been a tongue and grooved board we scrounged somewhere. It's not Red Gum, although it looks somewhat similar. Could it be mahogany? Tiger myrtle? It's definitely a hardwood.
What look like saw blade marks on the front is actually the natural pattern of the wood. The box has been oiled which brought up the colour nicely, and I intend to put some shellac on it eventually, just to get a low sheen on it, hopefully.
The hinges were a blessing. We found an old hardware shop in a small country town which had lots of goodies. Among all the stuff on the shelves were some little hinges, which we thought might come in handy sometime.
The little piano hinge fitted conveniently, and I like the look of its brass finish on this timber colour.
Cheers
Lili
