Butterfly Shadow
This was a gift for my fiancé for our two year anniversary. We said no spending money on gifts so I got her on a technicality and built one out of some scrap wood I had laying around. Not sure what the butterfly wood is or the backing but the base and rear joining piece is spotted gum. I really liked the rough look of the base so I left it as is with some light sanding and finish.
You can get the pattern, compliments of Steve Good, here in pdf form.
You can view the rest of the photos here.

That is beautiful, I bet she loved it. I agree with you about the base, it actually looks as if it was made for the butterfly.

I just got an idea.
If you can pin it on 2 sides, and move the butterfly lower.
Maybe cut the backing board to the same shape (but bigger, shadow like).
Then you could use it to hold cookbooks open on the bench.
Use the tips of the wings to hold the book open.
