Default Any disadvantages with the big throat scrolls?

Hi, I'm considering a scroll saw for my next workshop purchase. I have been looking at the Excaliburs online and am wondering if there are any down sides to the 30" inch size over the 21" other than weight and real estate?
(e.g. if you had the 30" and another smaller one; for everyday work on smaller material, is there any reason you would head for the small saw over the large one?)
Trying to decide if I should fork out the extra $ for the 30" for that day when I need something that bit bigger than the 21 (NB. I can only afford/want 1 saw)

Why do you need a big throat saw? to make use of the big throat you will be trying to spin some very big lumps of wood. By spinning I mean turning the job in different directions.

I'm with Red Gum..... I wouldn't want to cut something that big... I find it awkward to cut really big pieces.... even if they fit into the Delta throat.... often people forget that at one time the piece will stick out towards you... I had to stand up to bend over the piece to cut it... makes it very hard to cut precise. Big pieces like that I'd think would be more a bandsaw project.
Of course there are those huge clocks, mirrors etc... if you plan on doing something like that fairly often then the bigger throat might be worth it.

Good point Red Gum. I don't have any immediate need for a big throat saw, but I can see myself attempting some large fretwork panels (not too intricate) at some point and I would also like to have a go at some large jigsaw puzzles for my wife one day when I have the time on my hands.

Jutta is right. The odd time that I have worked on something that looks like getting big I find my arms are just not long enough to do the job. As for acuracy in that position it starts to get lost.

My saw is an 18 inch model

Not sure about the very large bit of wood, but wouldn't it vibrate alot when it hangs out the sides. Plus again I'm not sure but isn't the on/off switch at the back of the 30in machine, which means that you would have to lean over it to switch it off.

    Marg (not sure) lol lol

Never paid attention to the on/off switch.... but I did notice that it seems all but my good old Delta have the tension control way back on top... always wondered how short armed people reach it without getting up?
Maybe those machines don't need the tension altered as often? My old Delta is fine.. but the new one I have to adjust every time I open it up... a bit of a pain... hoping to get one of our guys to have a look at why it's playing up like that.

Personally I think the on/off switch should be in the front.. one of our guys moved the Delta one from the left to the front...
Hope one of the scroll saw manufactureres is reading theres forums!!!!!!!! lol
