Default Excalibur 21 - Replacing the upper Drive Link Assembly - Help!

I'm hoping someone will be able to give me some guidance with this one.

I have an Excalibur 21 Scroll Saw, which I love. Unfortunately, the other weekend what at first appeared to be a simple blade breakage, turned out to be the sheering of one of the bolts in the "bottle screw"-like arrangement of the upper Drive Link Assembly. After some time on the phone with the good folks at Carbatec, I believe that a whole new upper Drive Link Assembly will be on its way to me this week.

Unfortunately, the user manual provides only a series of schematic diagrams of the various bits, but no instructions about disassembling and reassembling the machine. I've made some tentative first steps, but am really not that sure what needs to come off to provide the required access to complete the repair - i.e. to remove the old and insert the new assembly, which I believe will need to be done at the rocker/cam arm.

I'd be most grateful if anyone who has been down a similar path could give me some guidance, especially if that included a diagram(s).

    Thanks in advance folks.

    Cheers,

Okay, so the replacement upper Drive Link Assembly arrived this week and guess what - the manufacturer has changed the design to eliminate the part that broke. Good call in my books, as the part was completely redundant anyway!

No instructions came with the part, so it was down to schematics and colourful language to get the job done. All up it took me about 2 1/2 hours, but only because I didn't have a clue what I was doing to start with!

The hardest part was working out the extent I would have to strip the saw down to in order to gain access to the installation points for the new part. Managed to nut it out in the end, with a minimum of frustration. The saw is all back together now and, luckily, no "extra" parts left over! Did a quick test run and all systems are go. Back to making sawdust!

I know you didn't receive any help with this, I certainly couldn't offer any input but I appreciate you posting the experience and results. I have an Excalibur and would have had no clue what it would have taken to fix this problem.

Would not have been able to help but I had this replaced by Carbatec earlier this year. Saw works pretty good now. Still not 100% happy. Tensioning of blade is always a hassle & bottom blade holder lets go fairly regularly

    Woodscratcher,

Re your bottom blade holder problem, have you tried cleaning off the end of the blade before inserting it? Sometimes they have a coating that can be a bit slippery. I just give my blades a light wipe with some fine sandpaper and have no problems with this.

I'm also surprised that you are having problems with tensioning, as the Excalibur system is very easy to use. Can you describe how you are going about this? I may be able to offer a suggestion if I know what you're doing and where the problem lies.

    cheers,
