Jigsaw Puzzles need help please
Hi all I am after some help please.
The Umina and Woy Woy men’s shed has been asked to make some large jig saw puzzles for some people with dementia they have to be large about A3 size with no sharp corners we are using pictures that long term patients have painted. They are on canvas with a wooden frame. We plan to remove the wood frame and make the jigsaw out of the picture attaching on to some 6mm mdf or something similar.
What I was after is some software that would print the actual jigsaw shape onto the paper to use as a template to cut out wooden shapes.
Then cut around picture with a razor knife and glue to wooden jigsaw pieces that you have cut out with a scroll saw.
It’s quite important to have large shapes with no sharp points. And vary the shapes from picture to picture.
Hope someone out there can help! Any way all you folks have a happy Christmas

I guess I'm a bit confused. I don't know why you would need a pattern for large jigsaw puzzle pieces. You know what a puzzle piece looks like, so just start cutting big ones after you have your picture glued onto the wood or MDF. Do it freehand. You just don't need to do all that fancy preparation and designing.
Sure, the shapes of the pieces will be different from one another, but that's what will make the puzzle interesting. They don't even have to be the same or similar sizes.
Try it with some scrap wood first. I think you'll find it much easier than you might expect - and each puzzle will be truly unique.
By the way, as I write this our son is on his way from Los Angeles to Australia to work on the "How to Train Your Dragon" stage show, which is in its final development stages and should open in your country in March.

I agree with CarterJ. Just glue the canvas to some MDF and start cutting random lines.

Scroll saw puzzles
Hi Carter and Steve thanks for your input I have started my project for the mens shed. I will use your method.
I am going to make a puzzle for Mum she is 93 and suffers from a dementia low level. I will use a family photograph for the jigsaw puzzle, Mum could relate to that photograph..
I am going to use Noels Idea on this picture it will have more pieces and will only be A4 size I think mum would handle that ok.
. What happened was the rest of the family got wind of the project; there is now a small list on the board for jigsaw puzzles using family photos.
When I get the puzzles finished I will put a picture up, I am not sure how they will turn out
I am about to put a new thread up on what type of scroll saw people are using you may have some input on that as well
Regards Col

Col. what you have cut is called a "push-fit" puzzle in that the pieces generally do not interlock. The assembler essentially slides the pieces into each other. I don't know whether that would be easier or harder than a typical puzzle with locking tabs for your target audience. Try cutting one with tabs and see what the reception is.
Good start. Keep it up. It's addictive.

Hi Carter
Thanks for that information. I had rushed this puzzle out after tea last night to show at the men’s shed as there are other people working on the project with me.
And the future puzzles would relate to my first post which was first viewed on the 12th of December is A3 size.
What my intentions are with Mums puzzle is to put on a wooden frame with a lip around the edge so that would hold the picture in place I think that the tabs would be a good idea on the other puzzles that are for the family, that method is from the information Trustinggibbsie so kindly sent me as this one is too.
This still is all very much a work in progress.
As I progress I shall put some more pictures up. But you are right it is quite addictive and as with all my woodworking I really enjoy the jouney

A great idea and excellent work Colbra.
With your permission, I would like to take the idea to the blokes at The Hills Mens Shed.
We have an ongoing project to make sets of large dominos that we supply to nursing homes, special needs schools etc. To date we have sold probably 20 sets. The dominos are large (21/2 x 6 inches) and are colour coded. We seem to sell them as fast as we can make them.

I would be more than happy for you to use this Idea
I in turn would like to use your Idea through the Umina and Woy Woy Men's Shed for the dominoes at some point in the future.
There may be other great ideas about that someone could bring forth, after all that is what this forum is about, and if helps people in some sort of need all the better for us all.
