    Question Newbie Scroller Questions

    Hi,

I am a newbie to scroll sawing and I have a few questions on getting started.

I bought an entry level scroll saw: a Ryobi 125W 45mm some 3 and 7mm plywood an some pin-less blades of varying types and sizes and I would like to begin scrolling. My aim is to make jigsaw puzzles, key-rings, word and wall art, however I need to practice before I attempt anything for real.

My questions are is the plywood okay for this and what type and size blades are best for practicing?

I apologize in advance if these questions have been asked and answered a thousand times before.

    Thanks for reading.

G'Day "Silvertayl", One of the blokes on the forum "pawoods" is very good at what you're hoping to do and yes, he uses good quality ply for some of his scrolling.... Cheers, crowie

use marine ply it holds together better and blade wise I use pegas #3 or you could ask Helen who supplies blades at a great price what to use . Just type in scroll saw blades au and you should find Helen.

Hi Silvertayl .I use 4mm Marine ply for all my Fretwork ,it may be a bit harder on the blades due to the different glues used but I find it has less voids in it than the ordinary type . as a beginner I think skip tooth blades may be the way to go till you get the hang of it maybe in the 3 to 5 sizes ,For my word art etc i use 19mm pine from Bunnings When i started out Crowie sent me a book titled Scroll saw Workbook by John Nelson which has exercises & projects for the beginner & everything you need to know about scrolling.I would send you a copy but can't work out how to do it via e-mail .Cheers Peter
