    Default Pegus Clamps

Has anyone out there had experience in replacing the clamps on an Excalibur scroll saw with the new Pegus clamps? My question is. Are the Pegus clamps worth the the 100 plus dollars to replace the standard clamps. If so would you fill me in on the benefits.

I don’t use mine enough to bother changing. There is a pretty comprehensive review here:

I have the pegas blade holders and they are the ducks n--s the bottom clamp requires no pressure or little to clamp the blade and the upper holder is far superior to the one supplied with the scroll saw. So short answer, if you use the scroll saw a lot and can afford to change the clamps go for it.I have used mine since they were first released no issues at all.

Thanks for the reply's on the Pegus clamps. Nice to see all three eastern states made comment. I think from the comments on these clamps I will give serious thought to replacing mine. I think then that I will be joining the ducks n--s league. That will be interesting. If any one else is willing to comment I would like to know if the Pegus clamps reduce vibration although I have taken most of the vibration out of my saw by lubricating the bearings.

    Thanks People

further to my previous comments I would think from handling the clamps that they are lighter because of the manufacturing process.

Back again. I ordered a set of Pegus blades this morning and should have them in a couple of days. Looking forward to fitting them and trying them out. That should happen next week all going well.

I hope I will be joining the ducks n--s group. I will let you know how I like them or if I have spent $130 for the sake of it. Helen Harris tells me that I will be pleased with them.

    Thanks for your help

I installed the Pegus clamps in my saw yesterday and have been using them for most of today cutting fairly fine work. As said I would follow up on my thoughts on them. I am pleased with the way they work. They are certainly better than the original clamps and I have noticed that they give me less stress as in I am able to control my work far better with them and got a much more accurate cut. I balanced a 50c coin edge wise on the table with out any effort and it stayed put even though I have my saw slopping towards me. Doing this I ran the saw slowly and at full speed. As the clamp design is much more simple they are easier to use. I had no problem installing them. I think it took me about an hour but in that time I checked the other bearing in the saw. I did have to re tune my saw. That was. Adjust the motor to give a straight up and down back and forward movement. Adjust the top arm to parallel with the table. Adjust the blade for square cut. These were all OK with the old clamps but were all out of wack with the new ones

Yes I am pleased with the clamps but not as enthused as I thought I would be. Yes they are worth the money.

I'm a bit late in responding to this thread, but here are my thoughts.
I purchased the Pegas blade holders about 12 months ago and am happy with them.

I find that the tension is better than the original holders when flipping the lever. By better, I mean a bit tighter.
With the original ones I found I had to twist the tension knob a little bit to get that nice "ping" sound.
Both upper and lower clamps seem easier to install the blade. The original bottom clamp was very difficult to undo by hand.
Perhaps I was over tightening it.
Vibration I haven't really found any issues either way, but I do have my saw bolted down to a heavy stand/table that I made for it which has about 20 bricks in it to keep it stable.
The only downside that I found is that they are made out of aluminium and the threads for the blade holding screws are starting to get a bit sloppy, so will strip at some point.
The top one in particular became a bit sloppy over the first weekend as I was doing a lot of internal cuts. Perhaps again I was tightening to hard. I have been more careful with this since then and it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse.
I have never had a blade slip out or break with the Pegas holders.
Worth the $, so will probably get another set when the threads finally strip.

oh, and because they are red, they cut faster. Just like a red car goes faster.

    Cheers

be aware that the pegas blade holders don't require tightening in comparison to original holders.[which had a habit of splitting] I have used them since first available and haven't noticed any wear in the threads mainly a top feeder.

I am very happy with my Pegus clamps. I understand that they are made from aircraft aluminum and are as strong as steel. I have found that all they need to tighten them is just a nip and that holds the blade. As as a result the thumb screws are very easy to use. As for vibration my General saw is as smooth as I would ever want a saw to be. I have greased the bearings in the rocker arms using a general purpose grease. To grease them it is quite easy. Just slip the bolts out one at a time and with something thin poke the grease in then put the bolts back in. When the excess grease is wiped away there is no dust collection problem. The greasing makes a world of difference. I can't understand why they don't have sealed bearings at manufacture.
