We contend with some introduced species, the most diabolical must be the Zebra mussel.
They clog water intakes, even populating the water cooling galleys in boat engines.
I suppose that the politician was a cane toad with an inferiority complex.

If they knew then what we know now about introduced species, I'd hope that the result would be different.
I can comment on what I saw on specimen-collecting field trips in the 4 years I lived in OZ.
The damage done by mammals was, in some places, extraordinary (eg pigs.)
I'm an advocate for all-out extermination, even if I have to buy my own ammo.
What I find hard to understand is the reluctance to get on with it.
Maybe it's done without any fanfare.
Released bullfrogs in the Fraser Valley, inland from Vancouver, have been eating everything in sight.
For a year, I tried to get into some "frog-gigging" and was always met with a wall of silence.
Real problem or just whining?
