    Default Sanding

Whats happened to the Intarsia forum? The last thread was mine six weeks ago. Isn't any one interested.

Apart from that can any one help me with sanding intarsia? At present I am rounding over with a Dremel, flap sander or the end of my Ryobi linisher.

I know the suggestions in the books are to use an inflatable drum sander but they are expensive and once bought need something to drive it. Also the abrassive is expensive.

I have been looking at the Ryobi belt sander that has three wheels and the belt is about 25 to 30 mm wide. I am thinking that if the back belt suport is removed it will flex nicely to round over.

cost wise the belts are only a bit over $3 and the unit is just $100. Not over the fence if it will work

I am enjoying the intarsia work as are many people who see my finished work. Would be good to hear from others in this field.

one meets the nicest people in here
Totally forgot asking about sanding at the club this morning..... sorryyyyy
I do have a good excuse tho.... we had fun? lol
I came home with a nice big piece of silky oak.... still in log form..... neighbours are starting to laugh... other wives come home with shopping bags... I bring home half trees!

If nothing else.... there will be lots of folks coming end of the months... I bet you can get a lot of advise as for which method of sanding is best for Intarsia.
You might also like looking over this website about Intarsia:

Lin used to be who kept this Intarsia forum going, but she's sooooo busy with her new tool....... maybe she reads this and starts feeling guilty?

    Default new sander

    hi red,
we've just had the woodworking show here in canberra.. i had the same issue as you.. what to sand bits of intarsia with.. at the show I found this new product that fits onto a drill press (floor type or even the smaller bench models). It takes normal small sanding belts... so far, though not really put it to the test yet.. lookin good. Has several 'drum profiles' so sanding small curves, both concave and convex, seems pretty easy. Also easy to attach to the drill press, and doesn't need to be removed, ever. It springs out of the way for normal drill ops. Embarrasingly I cant remember what the thing is called! When i get home i'll make sure of its name, and post the details tomorrow.
    cheers

hi again... got the info for the sanding thing i mentioned.... called the Wasp Sander.... comes with several attachments and accessories.. seems good for small detaily work. web address: www.piricdesign.com.au
they also sell packs of really fine grade belts for final sanding/polishing... these are almost impossible to find elsewhere. Don't know what sort of budget you have in mind, but the base kit is about $80 I think, and the accessories (diff contour drums etc) another $40 or so.
    cheers

Thanks for the info on the wasp sander. I have looked at the blow fly sander on the net and put out by the same people. It apears to have potential.

At present I am using a small rotary sander from Bunnings at about $12 and fitted to an old drill held in a vice. It is working quite well and I am finishing by hand.

I had the oportunity to try the small Ryobi belt sander but it didn't offer me any thing over what I am using at present.
