Some Scrolling Advice Please.
I would like to buy a reasonable second hand scroll saw to have a play and see whether I want to get serious. There are quite a few on Gumtree, not far away, from $60 up to $300-400.
My question. If I get one of these around $150-250, are there any pitfalls that I should avoid? I do not want to be 'put off' by something that a bit of advice could see me sidestep.
Preferably the ideal would be to meet and have a yarn with a dedicated scroller reasonably close in the SE Qld area.
Looking forward to hearing from other woodies.
Cheers, Fred

G'Day Fred,
I originally had a Ryobi unit from Bunnings and wasn't happy with it so eventually gave it away and bought a secoundhand 20yr old Hegner which is so much smooth running.
I'm not sure if that's any assistance but I learnt the hard way again, not to buy cheap.
Cheers, crowie
PS - I realize it's a bit of a drive but the Woodworkers Guild in Redcliffe used to have a good number of scrollers....
And here's one Aussie club though in the west..

Hi crowie,
Thank you for your reply. I have been looking on Gumtree in the SE Qld area and there are quite a few Ryobi which I am happy to steer clear of. Also the is a Rexon and a Rockwell, both around the $100 mark. I know you get what you pay for but I am not familiar with any of the brands of scroll saws so am on the lookout for perhaps a bargain with a good known model.
A Hegner would be great but I would like to try something that does not set me back too far until I see if it suits me.
Will keep my finger on the pulse and see what eventuates.
Cheers, Fred

Rockwell are a bottom end brand.
I had my own hardware store for 40 years.
Very basic machine that sold for about $70 - $90

I haven't used any of these, but Machinery House has some on sale (https://machineryhouse.com.au/Scroll-Saws)... I got a 2nd hand JET JSS-16a and am having some issues with the blade clamps... they basically don't hold the blade and the hex screw to tighten threads way too easily...
I only paid $50 for it and i've got new clamps coming my way (one day... bloody Aus Post!)
Maybe some others on here have experience with these machines...Coming Up With Complex Solutions to Non-Existent Problems Since 1985

In my experience I started with an old ryobi but soon upgraded to a excalibur with was a little pricy but has done hours and hours of intricate scrolling and hasn't missed a beat.,I guess what I am saying if you buy a cheap scrolls saw you will give it away because of the saw my advice get a top end saw if you can.

ritwin501 and Dibbers, thank you for your replies to my post. I am not in a tearing hurry to purchase so will keep on doing the research.
The Scheppach on the Machinery House site looks like a fair machine at a glance Dibbers so will look into it further.
Would like to talk to a dedicated 'Scroller' around the Gold Coast if there is one. Maybe this will catch a locals eye.

Hi DiRob, thank you for your reply to my post. I would love to go straight to a top model like the Excalibur but a bit beyond my budget and I am not sure just how much I will use it. Have to see how serious I become first.

I forgot to mention that the most critical issue is how to attach and detach the blade .This is vital when doing scroll work that involves lots of internal cuts.

Most Scheppach machines now are similar build quality to Ryobi. It may not be the case with their scrollsaw but I can't see why they would be any different to their other machines.
